I found it really upsetting that Momofuku would come down on a woman-owned small business after trademarking a common name for an internationally widespread condiment. In the article, she says the public outcry hasn't led to actual sales so I got her sambal chili crunch and rendang curry paste. (Her legal bills are pretty extreme.) Wish her the best. ❤️

The blooms started in early spring. The internet says they bloom in the fall. (Lies, LIES!) Plant is not self-fertile so you need two. Currently hand-pollinating bc only two plants have opened flowers and the rest are still buds. No pests noticed. Needs protection from high winds.

Tip: what to do with old/dead yeast

Slug death trap. This tip comes from a limacologist. Slugs are more attracted to bread dough than any other scent. They are also attracted to beer and will die in the alcohol. I use this in my sunroom to protect growing fruit and seedlings.

#ClimateDiary year and 1/2 ago, chipdrop arborists used a stump grinder and chopped up a lot of iris bulbs with the tree and brought the bulbs with the drop. I planted all of them and some are flowering now… a couple months early.

And this winter was so mild, squirrels planted peanuts in the yard last fall and they survived and grew. Replanted them in the garden.

Partially dug up peanut seedlings on bare ground. There are five clustered together. The stalks were nibbled on by rabbits and are regrowing along the sides.

Can anyone identify this pine tree?

Aralia spinosa, devil’s walking stick: leaf buds and mature leaves are edible. Buds taste like broccoli/brussel sprouts (w/o bitterness), leaves taste like salad green + asafoetida. Dried berries give me slight allergic reaction but ppl use it as a pepper substitute.

Light is casting on a cluster of red maple seed pods so that they glow with color. The seed pods have long fire-engine red stems and the seed pods are so richly colored they look like beta fish tails. Towards the center of the tail where the seeds are stored, they are bright chartreuse and blush pink and red. The end of the tail fins are deeply veined orange and red. One of the seed pods in front has a tiny white caterpillar that is easily overlooked. The stems are hanging off a branch on the top right and you can see a light green leaf bud facing upwards from where the stems emerge. The background is faded forest. Mostly brown and some green leaves and stems.

Sorry for long absence. My mom was desperately ill this winter and was hospitalized. When she came back, she needed 24h care and still is in poor health. I have been deeply stressed and needed to step back from social media.

Crocus is already blooming. Blueberries (and other native berries) are already leafing out and one maypop vine never died over winter. 🤯

First flowers, 3 1/2 years. Hopefully it sets fruit.

Last year, a Eugenia involuctrata flowered just a few months shy of its 3rd birthday but didn’t set fruit.

Malpighia emarginata, December 26, zone 8b. Plant is stored in garage overwinter.

Fortunately this is a plant that can bloom and fruit multiple times a year if warm and wet enough.

If you grow any citrus at all, grow this one.

Citrus obovata, Fukushu kumquat

Cold hardy to 28F/-2C, can be grown in a pot. Fruits 4-5 yrs from seed.

It’s the fruit that makes it so special. The peel is very sweet and chewy and the fruit inside balances it with a nice tartness. And bc you eat fruit+peel, it’s very nutritious.

Just went to a holiday party for an informal chat about planting native edible plants in cemeteries.

Result: to bypass all bureaucratic hurdles, they just show me where to plant. No $ donations or fundraising but ppl can donate plants for this project. They already have programs for habitat/wetland restoration that this can attach to.

So basically after the weather warms in 2024, they show me where to dig and I have at it. 🌱

Addressed all the envelopes for the native plant food security project and will be packing seeds this week. Will ship everything off on Monday.

The pawpaw and persimmon are partially cold-stratified already but since it’s winter, they should go back in the fridge as packed until spring. Boehmeria and physalis, follow directions on pack.

Is there anyone out there willing to help me?

I have no Christmas ornaments and the one I pine for does not exist. I want an 18-20inch blue skin, pink horned yeti. I would find and glue on the white fur. It’s arms should be upraised so it can hold up a 🏳️‍⚧️ flag. I’d surround it with 🌈 tinsel and LED lights for the window.

The body should be more tall/elongated in the second example, but blue hands/feet/face in the first (but not cross-eyed).

I started and finished THREE audiobooks. “Doppelgänger” by Naomi Klein, “Prequel” by Rachel Maddow and “The Color of Compromise” by Jemar Tisby. All recommend.

The sunroom of plants. A few plants on both sides and in the far back are not visible. The sunroom walls are white and it is night outside. The floor is brick. There is a grow light shining from above. The pots are in different colors and some are hand-painted.
A garage full of plants. It’s actually really hard to see just how many plants are there bc it’s a wall of green. There are pots of small plants on top of pots of large plants. It is taking up more than half the garage and there are very narrow paths to duck under branches to get around the whole jungle. There is some space behind this where I pull in around 7 large plants when the weather gets below freezing. These are on rollers. Going to experiment this year with keeping loroco outside all winter until really cold temps to see if I can keep the aphids away.

I knew that they probably get too large to keep in a pot but I found a mamey fruit 3 yrs ago that was the size of a large sopadilla and had a “small” seed inside. I grew it out thinking it would be a dwarf tree. Nope.
