Oh, how great! has won the international booker prize:

I haven't read this particular novel of hers (but I bought it as a present for my partner and now asked him to bring it to NL so I can do so on our upcoming vacation 😅), but her "Visitation" and "The End of Days" are books I keep recommending. I've also heard the translations are amazing!

(Yes, I'm distracting myself but Erpenbeck is seriously an absolutely stand out writer!)

Super excited about this, too.
Kairos is waiting to be read on my bookshelf.
I've also read Jenny Erpenbeck's novel 'Go Went Gone' (Gehen, ging, gegangen) which is wonderful and heartbreaking and heartwarming

Beautiful. I love cows and this one is extra cool
Also, in front of my inner eye I'm somehow seeing a little friend sliding down the horns 🙃
Thanks for bringing so much joy to my feed 💚

How far did astronomers travel world-wide for conferences in 2019 in total? More than 300 times to the Moon & back! Or, to put it in astronomical units: more than 1.5 AU, so to the Sun and halfway back!

A 🧵 summarizing our paper "Astronomy’s climate emissions: Global travel to scientific meetings in 2019" - published today, lead by Andrea Gokus (who also wrote the draft for this thread) and @knud, with many people, among them @leo & me, contributing:

Great thread and discussions - thanks for sharing.
Having just been to my first in-person conference in five years reinforced the notion of 'being there', chance encounters, longer conversations over dinner, etc. - it was so lovely to reconnect with the scholarly community (and with individuals I hadn't seen and spoken to in years).
But yes, as a disabled academic, it comes at a huge cost.
I needed a full week of downtime afterwards and I'm still not fully back to baseline.

So I had a suggestion for Myfanwy & friend to visit the Starry night world, but as much as I love the painting I couldn't place them in it.

"Oh!" I think to myself, "I can open the shutters in the bedroom painting, see the Starry Night beyond, and Myfanwy can be checking in to her friend."

I'm not sure the vibe is quite what I intended.

The end of a long day

Thought Myfanwy & friend could visit Hopper's Nighthawks.

Wasn't sure what to call the adaptation, but realise the obvious name is Nighthen.

As well as representing Myfanwy it is what someone in Scotland might say on their way to bed, which is what I'm about to do.

'Night hen! 💤

Day 3 of Duality@50 conference is coming to a close.
After 3 days of intense discussions my brain feels very exploded - (mostly) in a good way.
Reminded how hard is - I'm the only architecture scholar in a group of sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, mathematicians and statisticians and while it's super inspiring, I also translate in my mind all the time how everything I'm hearing might be relevant for my own domain

Tomorrow I'll set off on my first conference travel since 2019 to Switzerland.
In the 2010s I went to 3-4 conferences a year (and greatly enjoyed it) then the pandemic and put things to a grinding halt.
Hoping my energy management and pacing regime will work but also excited to see old conference buddies again and learn about new research.
Also excited about the train journey (including the scenic Gotthard route)

kerstinsailer,
@kerstinsailer@sciences.social avatar

My university, UCL is now supporting train journeys for over plane tickets due to the but it still takes so much dedication to actually do it as it's more complicated to key together journeys. I've got tickets from three different rail companies on various platforms / apps.

A turbulent start to day 2 of my as the direct train from Basel was cancelled due to engineering works. Took a slightly earlier one and need to interchange in Olten.
Organised impeccably at Basel - as you'd expect from Swiss trains

Last leg of the journey of my to Ascona - I've boarded the Treno Gottardo.
Sunshine, blue skies, barely a cloud. Perfect! 💙

I love this!
In my preview (even more zoomed in) it looked very architectural. Like two staircases and a roof light overhead

A new writer-owned, reader-funded science magazine has been founded - the Sequencer Mag.

I really hope it will thrive. I've been interviewed by one of their founders, Shi En Kim for her recent Nature piece on and she has been the most caring and thoughtful person to interact with

My discipline, anthropology, is not seen as a “growth" discipline, and departments are being closed down. But the world needs Anthropology and Anthropologists now more than ever!

Here are my 8 reasons for this:

  1. POSSIBILITIES
At a time of polycrisis, when the destructive fallouts of capitalist modernity are ever more apparent, anthropology highlights that there are myriad alternative ways of thinking and living; that there is so much to learn from other peoples in the world. 1/n

"It took me a while to recognize that I am now a disabled academic,” says Kerstin Sailer, a sociology researcher at University College London. (...)
But Sailer and others are a testament to the fact that long COVID need not signal a career dead end. With the right support, affected academics can still thrive.

This is from an article in Nature Careers on the impact of on academics, researched and written by the most wonderful Shi En Kim.

New paper alert! @ChrystalaPsathiti and I argue in our paper in the Journal of Architecture published today that adolescents' positive perceptions of school depend (among other things) on the school layout and levels of visibility from the classroom, which enables a greater sense of belonging to the school community

University College London shoutout! UCL is unwilling to set up a Mastodon account now, but they say that if there's lots of UCL presence here already it will nudge them in this direction. If you're at UCL or know someone who is, and you're on here, please reply to this to let us know! Current chief plotters: @sellathechemist , me and maybe more)
