If a blind student wants to do a CS undergrad specifically to work in assistive technology, what schools would be particularly good for that? (Feel free to boost for reach.)

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@mdekstrand CUNY SPS is where I went through (specialized in assistive technology/accessibility) via their Disability Studies program. I went for postgrad though and I'm not blind myself, but several professors were/many of them were disabled of some kind, used AT themselves, etc. Seconding RIT, the iSchool, and University of Maryland. MICA (also in MD) also has a UX and assistive tech program, but I don't know much about it and it was off my consideration due to cost.

It's been a minute; let's do this again:

If you are a Tabletop RPG nerd and have less than, say, 500 followers (or think you have less than 500 that are actually active):

  1. Write a post to introduce yourself and your particular nerdery, if you haven't already got one pinned.

  2. Reply in the comments with a link to or copy of that post.

  3. Share, check back to find people you want to follow, all that.

@LeviKornelsen Thanks!

Accessibility specialist but also huge tabletop nerd with chronic pain conditions. I have been helping with writing D&D Dungeoncrafts with my partner as we can, but I've also written for Onyx Path and High Level Games in the past. Would love to help with writing, editing, and digital consulting (for example: websites, PDF documents). One of my favorite Dungeoncrafts I've written: "A Rogue Heart": https://www.dmsguild.com/product/422491/SJDCNOS02-A-Rogue-Heart

Can anyone recommend me a reasonably affordable respirator that has removable filters and protects against airborne viruses like flu and COVID?

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@swachter @greene Seconding the Envomask. Not sure about affordability, but I've worn the Envomask in high-risk areas (hospitals, venues like conferences) - I can still talk, they're reasonably comfortable and not right up against my mouth. Also seconding the "wipe the seal down", though I'm prone to pimples etc anyway (I also wear a CPAP so it's a thing anyway for me)

It's weird to get emails from LA, considering the UserWay acquisition... and considering UW also used my signatory/support of the Overlay Fact Sheet and twisted it to seem like I supported their overlay. :/

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@yatil That was UserWay, but yes. The tweets I had were mostly about another overlay vendor (because that was what i was encountering as an end user) and... UW had positioned it in a very misleading way. This was... 2022? Not sure. But it's left a horrid taste especially as an end user when I cannot use keyboard navigation with overlays of any kind.

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@yatil This was before Twitter changed as well, so I can't even find the thread, but it was something UW had done there - RTing (quote-tweet) and framing some of those tweets in support of the Fact Sheet/issues with overlays in general, as about their competitors and not themselves too. To the extent that there are websites I either have to use mobile (where the overlays don't work) or... don't use that website at all.

Literally got told "we don't care about the 20 percent who need accessibility, we care about the 80 percent" and - this is why people working in accessibility get burned out, y'all. Because even WITH laws (Section 508, ADA, European standard EN 301 549), or policies, we don't matter. And people like me don't matter. And our civil rights are a matter of opinion or "we just didn't think about it"/"we need to look at the larger picture".

Finally realized why the accessibility community has been in a - well, maybe not tizzy, but there's a definite split between what I see on LinkedIn and what I see here, and what I see from people in the industry who are also disabled in some way, etc.

Late to the party because I really needed to think about this.

I believe what is happening is IAAP is hosting a session promoting .

It has 7 dudes on a panel:

• One is from (filed SLAPPs against disabled critics).
• One from (known for lifting content, failing at WCAG).
• One from (was so bad I ignored it).

And then three more I’m disappointed to see aligning themselves with this.

What’s the point of IAAP again?

@aardrian I just renewed last year. I'm just - if someone's already marginalized and already fighting against their exp/knowledge being dismissed, I'm just wondering 1) that the certs are now poisoning the well here, and 2) but with job precarity and marginalization, there's no "good" choice either. And I hate that. It feels like IAAP is taking advantage of desperation on all sides.

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@aardrian And I have no answer. Before I renewed (when overlay companies were first being included in IAAP) I ended my membership. It cost me more. And just - yes, it feels like it's now going against disability inclusion in the org to begin with, but I also don't know what to do when there are states where I cannot work (due to multiple marginalizations). And it feels that this desperation is being further taken advantage of or used as a marker of support, when it isn't, if that makes sense.

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@aardrian Thanks (I also can't find my way back to that Slack, so I must have missed a bit!) but... just an ongoing issue with certs, but especially 1) certs in "specialist" fields and 2) when there's already a high amount of dismissiveness etc, plus tech's history of racism, sexism, ableism etc as well >< it just compounds.

Arthritis and fibromyalgia (and dizziness/fall risk) means I am raising money for a power chair and seeing about being an ambulatory power chair user - using it to save energy as I can, go farther, etc especially on high pain flare days. Problem: power chairs are expensive, with the average cost about $2,500 base price. Yes. Literally. Disability tax at work. But if you can help share/donate? https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-fund-a-power-chair

Because I was asked, my take on the acquisition by :
https://adrianroselli.com/2021/09/userway-will-get-you-sued.html#LevelAccessBuysUserWay

I added it to the end of my lengthy post documenting ’s past (and ongoing) behavior.

kitwinter,
@kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

@aardrian Considering UserWay also used my tweets in support of the Overlay Fact Sheet in very misleading ways (to make it seem like I supported overlays), I have a personal issue with that company ON TOP of the fact it tends to break keyboard navigation for me. To hear this... wow. Financial incentives for making the industry worse.

I'm posting the video for this one, as I think the video really helps with the tone.

@gnitro Of course, this is me, so my entry for is a bit unusual: a Shinto purification prayer "Oharae-no-kotoba" set to music as a music video. There is a specific Shinto priest that is known for this - he did another MV called "Torii" as well. I'm never sure what to think about it, but it's an interesting mix! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYy58UYrcvc

    @genesisoflegend I specialized in digital ethnographies when I took qual / research methods, but that was awhile ago (at the latest, about 2019, due to me specializing in accessibility/disability in that program - the previous one however mentioned fandom and media studies, which might be more what you're doing). There's also an "indigenous ethnographies" book I've had wishlisted for ages. ^^; But if you want to talk about ethnographies or anything like that!

    ICYMI: it's not the sink drain, it was the toilet (a hammer dropped and the floor cracked, so the existing toilet leak basically went through the crack... and into our living room ceiling.) : If we replace the tile now, we can't take showers for 3 days -we already can't use that toilet in that bathroom until it's fixed. So - $200 for hotel room so we can take a shower, bath, and still have the tile fixed. https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/kitchan

    People go to Stack Overflow because the docs and error messages are garbage. TLDR exists because the docs and error messages are garbage. People ask ChatGPT for help because the docs and error messages are garbage. We are going to lose a generation of competence and turn programming into call-and-response glyph-engine supplicancy because we let a personality cult that formed around the PDP-11 in the 1970s convince us that it was pure and good that docs and error messages are garbage.

    kitwinter,
    @kitwinter@dice.camp avatar

    @mhoye This overlaps with accessibility. If we can't even get basic error messaging or commenting right for decades, I'm sadly not surprised that accessibility is seen as "extra" or "not worth the investment" - because things that are actually HELPFUL TO HUMANS get so easily dismissed. (Also ableism, but... it all compounds.)
