Strong words from Steve Paikin, someone who understands better than most and has a lot of respect for those that choose public life:

"Politics has become such a phony business: government members constantly trumpet achievements, while opposition members constantly feign outrage that authenticity — normally, the coin of the realm — is in increasingly short supply. Some days, it’s non-existent."

These measles cases are still at the point where Public Health can contact trace. Measles R0 is 12-18, which I believe means the 6 cases become 72-108 if they are around unvaccinated or susceptible people.

In a couple of weeks, this could be big. UK is at 347 cases since October; 167 cases in Austria. Romania reported 2000 cases in December.

Hey Climate Scientists!
Anyone know the difference between emissions from a cargo plane vs same cargo on a ship?

@Snowshadow if it's anything like the cost of freight, it would be under 1%.

leanlearnlead,
@leanlearnlead@mstdn.ca avatar

@Snowshadow in general, emissions are proportionate to cost.

Perhaps I can find an estimate.

leanlearnlead,
@leanlearnlead@mstdn.ca avatar

@Snowshadow I assumed a 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm box, with 5 kg weight, from Shanghai to Vancouver. Ocean freight worked out to 1.4kg CO2, air freight 89 kg CO2.

I see articles now talking about how AI chatbots can fill out job applications for you so that you don't have to deal with the monotony. This of course all falls apart when the hiring AI at the firm hires the AI that filled out your application, rather than you.

If you don't like the fact that a heated seat in your car is a paid subscription, have you considered doing without? (Speaking as a grumpy old-timer who somehow survived without heated car seats in minus 40 Canadian prairie winters in the late 60s' to mid-70's). Whine all you want, but your actions and $$$ are what enable the 1%.

@Jgmeadows As a former automotive leader that sold seat heaters...I have a feeling there will be lots of hacked cars out there. The systems are very simple and would need about $1 in parts.

As best as I can tell this story merely reprises a blog post about a conference presentation. I don’t want to minimize AI risks in any form but this one feels off. I’ll go out on a limb and predict that most likely the story will turn out to be highly inaccurate—even beyond the fact it the story doesn't make it easy to see it was just a computer simulation.

I've developed kind of a weird theory about why Mandalorian Season 3 didn't work for so many people, and it has nothing to do with Luke or Grogu or any of that:

Mandalorian killed people's interest the second that the Razor Crest was destroyed.

This occured to me while playing Jedi Survivor. The moment Cal is back on his ship, it had a weird "home" feeling for me. A character being in their ship, which is basically their home in space, fills me with warm fuzzies.

leanlearnlead,
@leanlearnlead@mstdn.ca avatar

@rodhilton Good point about losing the setting of the Razor Crest. When it was destroyed I let out a long "Noooooo!" That ship was a character, like the Falcon or Slave 1.

leanlearnlead,
@leanlearnlead@mstdn.ca avatar

@rodhilton Perhaps the transition piece is relevant - but instead of it being the ship, the fatherhood transition was found in the homestead on Navarro that the series closed with.

What is next? Mando gets married?
