Just got back from taking Max for blood work. I won't be able to concentrate on anything until they call me in a few hours. He's got abdominal pain but is eating normally, etc., so we'll see.

Photo: gorgeous brown and black tabby cat Max in sunlight and shadow standing on a footrest looking away from the camera, showing a small shaved spot on his neck where they did a blood draw.

I've never had a Jian Bing ("Chinese Crepe") before! Turns out, this place is a legend. I read later that Mr. Circle is famous and serves "Wellington's best Jian Bing or also known as Asian Crepe." Here's their recipe: https://www.rnz.co.nz/collections/recipes/mr-circle's-chinese-crepe-chicken-jianbing

@violetblue It’s funny, I went to China once years ago, and did not discover them in Beijing… But then years later a place opened here at home, and I also absolutely love them!

They’re definitely categorized under “perfect foods” IMO.

Stupid econ question:

So it looks like a lot of remaining inflation is rent. In that case, wouldn't you want to lower rates to increase home-building and home-ownership in order to reduce rent pricing?

mivox,
@mivox@mivox.net avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Banning investment companies from owning single family homes, or multiple apartment buildings, would make a much bigger difference much faster.

The Tale of Two Gynecologists

This is a bit long, and I've talked about this a lot lately, but it's something I'm thinking about a lot in the wake of so much hatred of female Healthcare. When my female troubles got bad enough that I finally talked to my doctor about it, he referred me to a gynecologist. I had already had several ultrasounds and an MRI at this point, and she had put me on some oral contraceptives for several months, (which made sick to my stomach no matter what I did) and had just done another ultrasound. She greeted me with "Well, you're really messed up inside, Honey.", which already had me pretty stressed out. Then told me I would probably need surgery to figure out exactly what was going on. She then asked me if I wanted children, and I said No. I had taken my husband with me to the appointment for moral support, and she glanced over at him, and then talked to me for 5 minutes about how many women my age could still have children, and I could definitely consider it, and that they would do everything they could to make sure I could stay viable. They could freeze my eggs if I had to do a hysterectomy, just on and on. She probably asked me directly 4-5 if I was sure I didn't want kids. Finally, I said, "Ma'am, my husband got a vasectomy over a decade ago, we are absolutely sure we don't want kids." After hubs had found me crying on the toliet, because my period was late again, he went to his doctor and said, "Hey doctor, I'm thinking about a vasectomy." The doctor gave him a pamphlet to read, and made him an appointment. The whole thing was done in a few weeks.

Anyhow, she finally referred me to a gynecological surgeon, and I was not looking forward to dealing with this again, and was just generally terrified of having surgery for the first time. I met with this woman and she was so efficient and practical. It is the longest doctor appointment I've ever had, since this surgery would be exploratory, she went over every possibility of what could happen when she was inside. She did a thorough exam, she went over all the scans that I had, and explained why she thought this needed done. Then she said she would like to put in a Mirena IUD during surgery. She said, "You're in pain half the month, and there's no reason for you to have a period if you don't want to have kids. You'll have some erratic bleeding for six months, but by a year most women have a very light or no period at all, there's no reason for you to needlessly suffer if you don't end up needing a hysterectomy."

It's interesting to me still, that one doctor was so focused on what my body could do, and another so focused on how I felt. I came out of the first appointment feeling scared and confused, and the second feeling heard and cared for. Feeling valued as a person and not a baby maker made the surgery much easier to go through, and the Mirena has been great btw. Women don't have to needlessly suffer.

@mivox@mivox.net avatar

@RickiTarr I’m so relieved to finally be old enough that having kids isn’t considered an issue by medical professionals anymore.

I wish I’d had the insurance I have now years ago, I would’ve had my tubes tied and gotten a uterine ablation while I was at it. Periods should be optional, and women’s pain should be taken seriously. :ablobcatbongoangry:

Sometimes, a bad memory can tear open an old wound that you thought had long healed. You wonder to yourself whether things could have been different, if you had made better decisions. Your mind teases you of what could have been, as your morosely gaze into a deep abyss of failure.

You think about what it would take to be reborn and start again, but your head is clouded, and your body weak. The dream lives on in you, but fear and sorrow just keep you down. To move a finger is to lift a mountain.

@deadsuperhero I remember being very excited to support ’s crowdfund, and I still have my t-shirt here somewhere. 😂 But when everything was said and done, I did not have the technical know how to run my own server.

YOU, however, sound miles ahead of me, and therefore plenty knowledgeable enough to start good things, if you really want to.

Today I got my first community violation on TikTok. It was a video about Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing that went on for minutes but failed to mention that McVeigh was a far right Republican white supremacist. That seemed like a pretty stark omission to me, so I left the fact as a comment. First, I was flooded by hateful responses. Then TikTok deleted the comment and issued me a “strike.” I appealed and was denied. I doubt a human ever reviewed it.

mivox,
@mivox@mivox.net avatar

@mattblaze @fraying It would seem that completely ignoring the actual context of whatever thing people are waving around as an in-group defining symbol is one of the most common human things in the world to do.

And yet I still find it absolutely baffling.

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

@RickiTarr In the spirit of the OP, my mom got a call from another child’s parent when I was very young (maybe 1st grade?), upset that I had shared the amazing and disgusting story of how babies are made.

My mom was a believer in “if they’re old enough to ask, they’re old enough to know,” but apparently this other parent wasn’t. :blobcatshrug:

Also periodically found myself on the verge of tears about Gaza. When baking bread, thinking of people starving while my government funds the actions of the people starving them. When scrolling Instagram, seeing videos of Gazans begging for basic safety, and flour. Just flour, and to not be killed.

What an intensely privileged life I have, that my biggest problem today was figuring out which mix of my half dozen flour varieties would make the best stand-in for plain whole wheat.

Israeli soldiers opened fire on starving families scrambling for scarce food aid, killing 104 and wounding over 700, then they backed over the bodies with their tanks. People had to carry the wounded away themselves as no ambulance could reach them and little if any medical services are available.

@seachanger Not a fan of brigading random people at all, but the default opt-in/opt-out issue is really key to me.

There’s entirely too much of “one random person (usually a financially comfortable white guy) decides what they think is best for everyone” in tech culture, and waaayyyy too little “let’s think about the consequences of this for everyone before we charge full speed ahead at it.”
