Well, that was exciting, and not in a good way. A big rig took the corner too fast, crashed into a building, and took out a fire hydrant and a power pole, also damaging a water main. I lost both water and power. Power is back on, but there’s no estimate on the water main fix.

So far the entire day has been yelling at cigna. anna told the phone person that she wasn’t mad at her, but I’m all “she’s working for an evil company in an evil industry that shouldn’t exist and her entire job as well as theirs is to keep people from getting health care. i’ve walked off less sketchy jobs when i was couch-surfing away from homelessness. she’s a bad person and she should feel bad.”

that ambivalent feeling when you fixed something for its main task (yay!) by making it less capable overall (fuck!) albeit in a way you don't really use (yay!) but have done and could again (fuck!) because despite knowing exactly what's wrong (yay!) you are never finding the part (fuck!)

which is why my 1st gen anker soundcore now has a barrel jack and is 100% externally powered.

tho' I suppose I could rig up a battery pack and make it mobile again. fugly, but mobile.

@RickRae it's just a microusb surface-mount socket so it's not that you can't get it it's that there are zillions of options and i'm not going to ever figure out exactly which one it is and it has to be exact because they moulded the case around it :/

My main takeaway from Target pulling lgbt merch in response to terrorism is that if cishet allies want to be useful they need to get in the habit of beating the piss out of right wingers who try to pull shit like this.

There were people in those stores who didn’t approve of the right’s terrorism as it was happening. Their cowardice is why it happened anyways. Disapproval is inadequate. Take action.

    Last weekend I met a union carpenter at a bar who urged me to try a women in trades program and then proceeded to drink me under the table.. with every jira ticket and meeting to plan another meeting and slack chatGPT screenshot the idea of just saying fuck it and becoming a journeyman electrician or something gets more and more appealing

    @hannah Speaking partially from experience (like, a summer's worth) and partially second-hand, electrician work's not bad work. It can get real hot though. Also cold, but for me, the bigger problem is "real hot." I've only done residential, but running new wire through hundreds of beams in an uninsulated and unvented enclosed attic in summer isn't the worst job I've ever done by a damn sight, but it is the opposite of a good time.

    Also get ready to haul a lot of wire. It's heavy.

    @hannah Also, storytime: I was working a kitchen rewire while structural engineers were working in the same area of the building (though not the same room) and it was back-install of kitchen fixtures in new tile and they'd picked the smallest boxes allowed because of course they had and it was hot as fuck and I was having a Bad Day and the lead of the structural engineering team started laughing, so I looked over at him and said "What" and he said "Now I know you're a real electrician," and I was all "...why?" and he said "Because you swear like one. Nobody swears like electricians."

    I hadn't even been aware I was swearing. And apparently, this is a thing, and electricians are the most sweary of the trades. xD

    @hannah Small's not a problem. Small can be an advantage. When I was in grad school doing this I was like 5'4" and that means you can get your hands and body into places dudes - particularly big dudes - can't.

    But yeah, you'd need to build some muscle. Not crazy amounts, but some. Enough to pull and haul wire.

    (I had a big growth spurt after, ended up over 5'7", still don't know what's up with that.)

    I don't understand the impulse some people are having to use they/them pronouns for a gender nonconforming girl who was forced to sit out her high school graduation after school officials told her she had to remove her pants and just wear underwear under her robe.

    She's very masc presenting, but her mom is quoted using she/her. Using they/them imposes something no one has asked for.

    • GOP requires phone censorship.

    • GOP makes it illegal for trans people to use correct bathrooms, and for IS people to use bathrooms at all without separate facilities - or a guard.

    • GOP broke the filibuster, passed a 12-week abortion ban, banned trans youth health care.

    • A fash strategy note: most GOP senators can't run again due to quorum-denying walkouts.

    @threetails Nor did I say it was. Oregon is in fact rather safe, hence its presence in the sanctuary states list. (See previous update.)

    That doesn't mean Oregon doesn't still have fascists working to do fascism, though, because believe me, they do. As do we, up here in Washington.

    A state being mentioned in a Fascism Watch doesn't mean it's fascist. It means there's some fash bullshit happening there I think worth mentioning. In this case, it's Republican tactics. ("Our country to rule, or no country to rule.")
