Build your own machine using paper. Yes, paper! 🤔 It's compatible with models I, M1, M2 and M3. It even simulates the plug board. 👍

All you need is a printer, scissors, some clear sticky tape and a crispy tube. Have fun. 🤣

RIP Mars, 2010 - 2024
This morning I found Mars run over by a car. I miss him very much. We got him from the shelter and he showed his gratitude every day. He was cuddly, playful, a rascal and very curious. Wherever I was, Mars wasn't far away and he spent many cuddly hours on my lap. I am stunned and incredibly sad. My heart is broken and I am crushed 🖤
Goodbye Mars, miss you, Thank you for love 😭 😿

@evelynefoerster It turned out yesterday, that there was a #BlackCat to be given away. She is very friendly and calm. We instantly decided to take her.

Her name was something like Nanya or some gibberish. Since we name or cats either after candy bars or ancient gods, we decided to call her Hera (the wife of Zeus). Mars was both a candy bar and the god of war. 🤣

Below is the first shot I could take of her.

One of my all-time favorites: the MOS Technology KIM-1 computer has a great modern replica (Micro-KIM). It’s less than half the original size. The original single board computer was very limited.

Unfortunately, Briel Computers, the maker of the Micro-KIM, doesn’t offer kits anymore. 😔

But see for yourself. Please read the Wikipedia page and the Alt-Texts. It's things like these that demonstrate on a very basic level how computing works.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KIM-1

The same clock program as described in the previous picture in a form, which can be “loaded” directly into the KIM-1’s memory. Programs, or rather memory areas in general, can be “saved” and “loaded” from and to the KIM-1 by simply dumping the areas in a well defined format to the serial port or reading data of the same format from the serial port. The code displayed here shows the aforementioned clock program in that specific format. It is a very early form of saving and loading a program or data from and back into a computer.
This image shows a terminal window which connects a Mac over a serial port (USB-C to D-Sub 9 connector), 8N1 at 4800 baud. It shows the (24 hour format) time 21:19:10 stored into memory locations $0060-$0062. Then, the PC (program counter) is set to $0200, which is where the program starts in memory. Then, a “G” for the “Go” command is entered which simply makes the KIM-1 execute the program at the current program counter’s location. Please note that the simplicity of attaching a serial terminal is a specialty of the Micro-KIM replica. The original KIM-1 had a serial port, but it was very basic and couldn’t be easily hooked to a terminal.
This is an image of a Micro-KIM, running the clock demo program. It’s a very accurate retro replica of the KIM-1 computer which was released in 1976 as a single board computer by MOS Technology. This retro Micro-KIM is connected to a Mac using a serial cable and running the clock program. The original KIM-1 had 1 KB of RAM. It could be expanded to 4 KB. There is a 32 KB RAM expansion board for the Micro-KIM as well as some other special expansion boards.

paulfoerster,
@paulfoerster@swiss.social avatar

The Micro-KIM replica with the 32 KB RAM expansion added. It is switched on (see the burning LED). It also is hooked up to my Mac via a serial cable. So I can use a terminal program to access it.

The 6-digit LED display is off because the serial connection switches it off while the 6502 runs monitor program code. Note that the display can show output while being connected to the serial line, though. But this is only outside the monitor program.

The Micro-KIM 32 KB RAM Expansion mounted (vertically) to the port connector. The jumper (J1) of the Micro-KIM main board can be seen to the left of the port connector. It controls the use of the built-in address decoder. It has to be on in normal operation when nothing is attached to the port. This enabled the onboard address decoding scheme of the 6532 RIOT. But as soon as hardware is attached which provides its own address decoder, then this switch must be off to avoid memory address collisions. This is why it is off when the 32 KB RAM expansion is attached.

I redid the model following the instructions posted by @TilliAtHome. Thanks for this one. 🙏🤣 It looks better now. I rendered the sad figure from roughly the same angles as I originally did. All bricks now have valid (available) colors too. The first version I did, had same non-existing colored bricks. Also, the now finally has his unfinished . 🤣

Enjoy. 👍😝
