My retro computing niche is source code archaeology: the art of reconstructing maintainable source code from disassembly and reverse engineering. It's harder than it sounds but also fascinating and rewarding. I also enjoy working with unpopular or niche programming languages. I very much follow the beat of a different drum.

Been hearing whispers all weekend, some from people who I'd definitely listen to, of a remote execution 0day in the Signal desktop and possibly also mobile app. Mitigation is supposedly to disable link previews (under settings->chats).

I have no more details. What I've heard doesn't completely make sense, but disabling link previews should be at worst harmless and seems prudent until this is clarified.

@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social avatar

@mattblaze This is why some people in the industry bend over backwards to treat all message formats as plain text and nothing else. for email, for , etc.

You can't really hack plain text.

My laptop has firmware that vendor-locks the (buggy) WiFi card. Any attempt to replace it results in the system failing to boot with an "unauthorized network card" error.

Obviously, this is needles vendor lock-in. Are there any useful guides that would help me understand how to dump the firmware, disable the check and reflash the system with modified firmware?

@ai6yr Lenovo, which is kind of a surprise. Good guess, though.

profoundlynerdy,
@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social avatar

@ai6yr Yeah, I've purchased a WiFi card pulled from another Lenovo of the same era — with a different WiFi chipset — just to see if it works. Other than that, I'm reduced to hacking the firmware.

Are there preexisting libraries of filters for sites that don't support or don't support it well? I'd like to be able to import a lot more stuff into so that I can cut down on random surfing.

Are there any good fixed width that are especially good for representing math? Example: the over scores in 0.3̅3̅ can be functionally impossible to spot with Fira Code.

Trying to write math-y things in on should not be hard.

I'm in the early stages of writing some technical documentation. It's just some notes in right now but I'll probably pivot to before releasing it. I need to simulate an LED display in an : basically a fancy 7 segment plus some small status icons.

I could make each SVG of the display manually, but it seems like I should be able to use a of some sort to accomplish the SVG generation. Has anyone else done something like this

@nocontextb5 If I remember correctly, this is the scene where Sheridan puts his link (communicator) up his rear end while he tries to talk the bad-guy of the week off the proverbial ledge.

@nocontextb5 BTW, David McCallum passed away today. He was in episode 4 of season 1. You might want to post a B5 scene with him in it.

I wonder if it would be possible to make every URL a key that leads to a social feed where commentary could occur independent of site's hosting platform. Is that a thing?

I want to replace my existing wall thermostat with something smarter but NOT connected to "the Cloud" for security reasons. The more open the the better.

My goals are to be able to deploy wireless temperature sensors in every room of the house and be able to script things from a with API calls to the device. Any suggestions?

My first post in Mastodon!
I'm Nosrat, I'm doing my PhD in computational neuroscience in university of Geneva.
I’m working on understanding underlying dynamics via direct measurement of neural spiking under the supervision of Timothée Proix.
A repost would be amazing as I’m finding my network here in Mastodon.

profoundlynerdy,
@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social avatar

@Nosrat What would you consider to be the foundational text of Computational Neuroscience? I've tried to read some books on the subject but I found the subject — as presented — to be impenetrable.

For context: my interest is in modeling parts of biological neural networks to better understand how certain brain systems falter and fail. I don't have a PhD, I'm just a very interested layman.

Making some good contacts on the 15 meter band right now. Again, amazing to me that I’m essentially using the power equivalent of a lightbulb, setting it on my balcony, and waiting for someone in Belize to see it and flick their lights on and off in reply. And it works.

WikiPedia says: “historian Herodotus … visited Tyre around 450 BC … and wrote … that according to the priests there, the city was founded 2300 years earlier …. Archaeological evidence has corroborated this timing.”

I write this from Sunnyvale, California, incorporated in 1912.

Ahem.

@J12t He had good sources. The priests' oral history was reasonably accurate which is kind of nice. By contrast, I think Lupa weening Romulus and Rimus is about as historical as George Washington and the Cherry Tree.
