Someone should show this piece to editors of The New Republic, NY Mag, Slate & all the other media orgs who have published dangerous and anti scientific conspiracy theories about this disease.

This from @georgemonbiot is what ACTUAL reporting looks like https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/mar/12/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-me-treatments-social-services

rayhayes,
@rayhayes@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz @georgemonbiot It's so strange that this has been going on for so long. Back in the mid 80's my first wife was diagnosed at first with CEBV (Chronic Epstein Barr Virus), then the diagnosis became Fibromyalgia and finally CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). So that was almost 40 years ago.

Is software development a creative job?

rayhayes,
@rayhayes@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft It could be if you're doing UX design which I am terrible at but my coding is great. So once the app is done, someone with a creative side needs to review it and suggest color changes, position improvements, etc. It's why I didn't become a photographer right out of high school. A pro told me I didn't have an eye for color or framing.

rayhayes,
@rayhayes@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Personally I think if you start to make it a rule-of-thumb that Pull Requests must be big or meaningful or good then it stops the natural breakdown of work into small chunks perhaps even just one line in one file.

Rite Aidโ€™s AI facial recognition system falsely and disproportionately identified women and people of color as likely shoplifters.

Rite Aid employees acting on false alerts from the systems followed customers around stores, searched them, ordered some to leave and, if they refused, called the police to confront or remove them, at times in front of friends and family. By @drewharwell
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/12/19/ftc-rite-aid-facial-recognition

rayhayes,
@rayhayes@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz @drewharwell I wonder if Apple stores are equipped with the same. Security followed a non-white woman out of the store recently and I happened to be leaving at the same time. About 10 stores later when she realized she was being followed she screamed at him "Are you following me?" and he said no and turned down a convenient escalator. She was pissed!

rayhayes,
@rayhayes@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft No good choices actually. I'm financially secure and as secure in my career as anyone can be these days. A sense of purpose is highly overrated. I just like to get through today. Naps are actually great since a good night's sleep is difficult to come by these days. And I've found that there are a lot of very good Linux desktops around since even the Lindows days.

I lived in LA during the first E-Scooter pilot program. Woke up one day and there was just these electric scooters everywhere. You unlock them with an app and can ride them anywhere you want to go. Once you're done, you just leave it wherever. Then someone else can come and take it to wherever they want to go. If you take one home and charge it, you get paid some money.

It solved so many problems. You didn't have to find parking, it was often times faster to travel by bicycle like vehicles due to traffic, you didn't have to worry about getting your vehicle back home if you got drunk, nor worry about having to lock every part of your bike to every other part to stop thieves disassembling it.

Ultimately, it wasn't a good business due to a multitude of reasons. The difference between ride cost and cost of production meant scooters had to do hundreds of hours of rides before people totaled them or threw them in the sea or they couldn't break even. People were force to ride on sidewalks and mow down pedestrians because there's no bike lanes. Residents petitioned and had them banned due to people leaving them blocking driveways or littered across the sidewalk. Literally every single one of those problems would be easily solvable if it were a public service instead of a private business. Some regulation, enforcement, bike lanes, and what you have is an incredible inner-city public transport system.

rayhayes,
@rayhayes@mastodon.social avatar

@malwaretech Here in Bothell, it seems a lot of kids are using them probably with their parent's account. It's rare to see a kid wearing a helmet though even though they're on the sidewalks and in the middle of the road and not stopping at stop signs and just plowing through the crosswalks. Most of the adults have helmets and seem to be following the traffic rules for the most part. Right on red/stop signs without stopping seems to be as much a problem on scooters as in cars.

    I read "A People's History of the United States" last year. It was so depressing to read how many of the people we've been taught in school to respect, were either double billing the government for contracts, stealing land, etc. It seems there's no one anymore that is worthy of our respect.
