Queer hacker girl/muscle girl.

Cursed systems appreciator who has spent a lot of time thinking about CI/dev tools/platform eng.

Frequently interested in things people think are "too difficult" or "witchcraft": analog electronics design, music, chemistry/materials science, qualia, etc.

Something I’ve learned, that I feel very strongly about:

All of us grew up believing myths about ourselves. ‘I am not creative,’ or ‘I am like this’. I am a person who doesn’t like cabbage, who loves coffee, I can’t draw to save my life, I can’t cook, I like dessert, or I don’t.

Allowing myself the space to explode some of the myths I’ve believed about myself has been the best thing ever. Who cares if I can’t draw? I’m drawing anyway.

@skinnylatte This is why I've been stubbornly teaching myself math (at the "proving things from axioms" level) lately. It turns out that much of the difference between me and someone who seemed to have a lot more facility with it is that various forces told me that I wasn't good at it earlier in life, and I believed them.

In realty, it seems I'm no more inherently incapable of this than I am of difficult videogames, its just try until my mind changes shape and develops heuristics to succeed.

I am actively looking for software engineering work again.

I'm adept at understanding a lot of the sociotechnical concerns that surround the work (customer requirements, the business domain, agile process, security threat modeling, communicating between technical specialties).

Practically, I've done a lot of Linux, networking, dev tools, platform work.

I'd like to work somewhere with other women in my organization (ideally management chain).

I learn fast.

(🔁 welcome)

Short version of what people need to know: if you're installing or operating "blacklight" bulbs that don't have an opaque phosphor coating inside the tube, and don't have the characteristic purple-blue color, you're installing a germicidal UV-C lamp that humans should never be exposed to.

Hey, if you are looking to make a (US) tax-deductible donation before the end of the year, Trans Lifeline could really use it, as they're having to pause operations right when a lot of people probably need them most.

(Just making my own post because I didn't like the language in another post that's going around, I have no particular connection to them.)

Whoa, the 1995 "Ghost in the Shell" is free on Youtube (at least in the USA), if you have never seen it before, you should: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHil4Y4r3Wk

I'm still stunned by the joy I feel when, randomly, in places I have no reason to expect it, I see visual evidence of another trans woman just living as herself in the world in other people's lives.

That would have been so rare in the world of my childhood.

Today is "International Non-Binary People's Day", and if you are a cis person, honestly the best thing you could do to support us is to do everything in your power to remove unnecessary "sex" or "gender" fields from everything from official government records to your random internal corporate databases.

I guess dangerous power "laser pointers" (actually much higher power laser diodes in a handle with a battery) are becoming so common you should now generally assume fools pointing random lasers at people are an actual danger and you should always look away. :(

I remember when >5 mW lasers weren't being packaged in handheld devices and weren't so easily available. (Amazon sellers have them now, I checked.)

I sorta want a Ghostbusters (2016) style remake of Sneakers.

Perhaps a bunch of autistic trans women, one completely normie cishet guy, and a nonbinary Cosmo.

This has me thinking of Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle which is wonderful because it isn't just a self-help book, it's also a feminist rant about how fucked up it is that society expects women to solve their patriarchy-imposed stress on top of all their other responsibilities.

One of the best things I've been learning in the ~5 years I've understood myself as part of a marginalized group is:

No matter how angry you are or how powerless you feel, recreationally shitting on other marginalized folks isn't going to heal you.

Neurodivergence and browser tab habits. Consider self-diagnosis valid, if you have both, whichever seems most significant in your life:

I am more <X> and I tend to <Y>

I think I know what this is going to show, but I'm curious.

P.S. Not intended for this to come across in a judgemental way, we all use tools in very different ways

Two bits of good trans news that make my actual life easier:

California fixed it so if you update your marriage to reflect a change in gender, they'll seal the old record and issue a new one: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CHSI/Pages/Assembly-Bill-(AB)-218.aspx

Illinois removed medical gatekeeping of the birth certificate change process: https://dph.illinois.gov/resource-center/news/2023/july/idph-launches-modernized-process-to-change-gender-on-birth-certi.html

It's a little annoying to see everything about Bluesky attributed to Jack Dorsey and not Jay Graber. Like it may all be horrible, but you don't have to instantly erase a woman's agency in every comment you make.

(Edit: maybe she is just a figurehead, but if you're not specifically calling out that fact, your comments look pretty darn misogynistic, to me)

It bothers me that people think LLMs are cheap.

Will they still seem cheap when their investors start to demand returns and they increase the API pricing?

And then there's the carbon footprint.

Having made modest progress in therapy leaves me realizing that a lot of people's moral positions aren't actually something they've thought hard about but instead a random soup of vibes and trauma.

On some level I think it's kind of a bummer that nearly all trans healthcare is still just prescribing bioidentical hormones and not exploring the uses of all the known SARMs and SERMs to let people tweak secondary sex characteristics at a finer granularity. This isn't merely a bias towards safety, this is a bias against letting people experiment with biological gender in ways the patriarchy thinks is threatening.

Looking at some old bookmarks, it appears I've been vaguely curious about category theory for 12 years.

I might be finally in the right frame of mind to do something with that curiosity. Overly-masked autism and ADHD isn't a good state to be in.

I'm not precisely sure what I'm going to do with these realizations, but it's nice to realize that ... you can just learn things and have fun doing so. You shouldn't have to be constantly proving yourself to capitalism or others.

This is partially inspired by @grimalkina 's recent posts

It's fascinating to me that I've always been somewhat aware of security topics, even if I've never worked in an overtly-security role in software engineering.

I think for me the reasoning was always: safety and reliability are important, security can often be a limiting factor in those areas, therefore, I should care about it.

And apparently some people are just going through a sw eng career thinking that's not their problem?

As much as I love Rust's approaches to memory safety, it's really messed up how people of my generation seem to often act like memory-unsafe code in C is the problem.

We've been experiencing hilariously-badly misconfigured services for many decades at this point on the internet. For a while things shipped with bad default configs, that's less common today, but honestly, we still have folks configuring a wide-open configuration to temporarily solve a problem and forgetting about it.
