5. Do you have fans/people who enjoy your writing? What’s your relationship to them?

❄ somehow I seem to have fans. I think accurately that they are the best people/machines/objects on Earth and/or very distant space. as the interactive fiction girl of fedi my relationship to my readers is an interactive one, their choices shape Ætherglow into what it is. but Antifascist Fantasy is my story to tell so there’s been minimal fan involvement. I aspire to have a relationship more like a prophet and her fanatical cult but we’ll get there in time.

Ch 10 Nbr 08 — Do you agree with Michael Moorcock, who said: "Ignore all proffered rules and create your own, suitable for what you want to say"?

Context is important here, so here's the full quote for you to read first: https://www.writingclasses.com/toolbox/tips-masters/michael-moorcock-10-tips-for-good-storytelling#:~:text=Carrot%20and%20stick—have%20protagonists,what%20you%20want%20to%20say.

The advice boils to down to learn how to write and practice enough that you understand the basics (items 1 through 9), and understand what about all that gets in the way of you telling your tale... then tell your tale the way you need to tell it instead. I kinda agree...

To the extent you can be truthful with yourself and keep your ego at bay. This took me decades.

YMMV.

@sfwrtr @orionkidder That’s my approach. You’re bound to make money either way. It depends on how much you need/want ;) Publishing and marketing force you to write to rules and in narrow genre lanes so they can better classify your writing. Without classification, they can’t target “your” audience. In doing so, you’re forced to lose a level or creativity and story telling. Writing is about fostering and spreading creative thought and imagination.

June 06 Have you queried agents for traditional publishing? How did it go?

I queried three publishers early in my days, and when they responded negatively, I decided I would not publish.
Well. Things did go differently, after all.

But never an agent. A friend suggested it once to me, but I never acted on it.

#WritersCoffeeClub 6/6 Have you queried agents for traditional publishing? How did it go?

I actually did, way back when I was writing fantasy in German. Scored a contract. Dreamed of signing with a German publishing house.

It never happened. Agent didn't know how to market fantasy. Never was willing to communicate what they had done.

Contract dissolved five years later when I realized they were only holding me back.

Went into self-publishing, never regretted it.

Have you ever had to change anything because you felt it was no longer relevant?

I wrote a story a few years ago and I'm polishing it up now for publication and noticing how a few references have dated soooo quickly.

5/6: Do you have fans/people who enjoy your writing? What’s your relationship to them?

I have, they are awesome, and I encourage them to use my work in their own projects as much as possible.

And some of them do so, and seeing the results makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

June 4: How do you handle highly intimate scenes?

sweats in has-published-erotic-stories <.< >.>

Seriously, it depends on the audience and the story. Some stuff is full camera on. Others is fade to black. Some things the intimacy is important, even if the story isn't NSFW, and even in adult stories sometimes you don't need to focus on stuff because the action (hurrhurr) is elsewhere.

(And if you're wondering, I publish the adult stuff under a different name. It's not hard to find or figure out, but I don't link the mostly-all-ages stuff and the porn)

Who is your most creative character?

Definitely the minstrel, Shawmelle. She sings, plays a lute and writes her own songs. Her father was a minstrel, as well, and was the one who taught her to play.

She's also very lucky, in that one of the kingdom's squires takes a liking to her. 🙂

Fantasy need not be epic! My first fantasy is out now. The Tyrant of Spite is a light-hearted novella with coming of age and romance themes. Nothing epic or grim, I went for a very light touch with a little magic.

I designed the cover using a licensed image from Tithi Luadthong (@grandfailure on iStock) and Photoshop. This wonderful illustration inspired the story.

Available now from Amazon as an ebook.

A few quick reminders:

1️⃣ "Cis" is not a slur. It just means "not trans".
2️⃣ "Queer" is not a slur (unless said with malice). We queers have been working hard at reclaiming it since the early '90s; don't undo that! (https://archive.is/deRvE)
3️⃣ The A in LGBTQIA+ stands for "asexual", NOT for "ally". Allies are nice, but they're not part of the LGBTQIA+ community itself — and aces are. (https://www.sfgmc.org/blog/lgbtqia-meaning, https://gaycenter.org/community/lgbtq/, https://lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/LGBTQIA%2B_Wiki)

How do you handle highly intimate scenes?

With words and emotions.

Be it lovers entwined, a refection on someone's death, a mental break down, or that quiet moment two people understand a relationship is over.

If we're being coy and really mean "two people fucking" then I don't.
Erotica isn't in my wheel house.

Only a few hundred words, but there are enough bones in the pile to fill a bigger package.
We'll see what can be teased out of the concepts and if there is enough ideas to find a novel-length bucket of words.

Y'know how there's a pattern of behavior where someone says something is bad about the tech industry or community or OSS software or something, and then every single nerd within a 50 square mile radius says WELL ACKTUALLY??

I just realized that if, like, even 10% of them just... Sat down and spent some energy fixing the problem instead of insulting someone for experiencing it, we would've solved all those issues by now

333 — Any characters who are a part of the + community?

More than one, and in many of my stories. Loren is non-binary and genderfluid teen, with variable preferences depending on the hour of the day and how their brain wired (literally) at the moment. Maistro is everything-sexual (as long as there's consent and of legal age). The Still Unnamed Daughter might have done some non-het experimentation. And Our Hero learned to like women's clothing and shoes…>=)
