I'm a middle-aged single dad living on the Atherton Tablelands, Australia. I work in Aged Care. Hobbies include tabletop roleplaying games, casual computer gaming, short hikes, and wincing in pain. Take it as read that I believe in all the usual left-wing, egalitarian stuff, but I rarely post about any of it.

I talk about Sweden way too much for someone who isn't in any way Swedish. Sometimes I even try writing in Svensk.

I keep telling people that a vanilla soy latte is technically a three bean soup, but nobody understands. They just nod and smile like I'm the crazy one.

I’m very fond of stories in a universe where some advanced, but long vanished, race of enigmatic aliens has left behind strange artifacts: like puzzle boxes or dungeons for our heroes to explore and nearly get killed in. If not aliens let it be a lost human civilization.

I also like to think about those ancient people who built the ‘Temple of Doom’— for all of those traps to work so well after thousands of years they must have been very clever. What was it like to set them up?

@futurebird You know how at the end of Raiders where you see the huge secure warehouse full of mystic artefacts? What if that's exactly what the hidden temples were, and there was some Biblical Indiana Jones who stole the Ark from an even older secure site. And some day, a 45th century Indiana Jones will rob the US warehouse and defy its security.

Chocolate comes from cocoa, which is a plant.

Therefore, chocolate is salad.

The end.

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@dgar you'd have to mix it with a couple of other vegetables for it to count as a salad. Like maybe chips and heroin.

Good god. My 6 year old just used the voice command for the TV to play Teen Titans Go. The TV agreed happily and brought up Guyana: The Tragedy of Jim Jones.

One of the bridges on the edge of town got wiped out completely, taking the water pipes with it. Now a lot of Mareeba is isolated, and has no tapwater. My house is okay, but there's a lot of older people out that way.

My son found a bowerbird bower a few blocks from home. I think it's a Great Bowerbird (that's its name, not my opinion).

This is not a nest. It is a Tinder profile that uses Instagram filters. The male builds this tunnel, and carefully arranges pale grey bits and pieces in an exact pattern, bigger at the front, smaller near the tunnel, shiny out the back. Then he stands in it. The foreshortening makes him look huge and sexy.

The bower from the other side. An amazing collection of nature, plastic and glass, carefully arranged by the bird. Move a single item, and the bird will in time move it back to its proper place.
The bower from above, exposing the illusion that the bird has created. Note that the area around the bower has been flattened and cleared.

This dragonfly was busy moulting or being dead or something. It ignored me completely. The intricacies of the pattern on its abdomen are awe-inspiring.

I haven't seen the bower bird bower around the corner from my house in a while. The little bird hasn't stopped improvements. Here we see a solid road of white things leading to the bower, darker objects and a bit of green at the front to really help the foreshortening illusion. And on one side - and only on one side - of the bower, there is a modest collection of red things. I'm not sure what they add, but the bird likes the effect.

Wujal Wujal is a small indigenous town consisting of a couple of hundred people. They're in for a wild night. Cape Tribulation is half the size but white people and tourists. I don't doubt that the residents of both are having less fun with this than me.
