Born in 1906, computer scientist Grace Hopper invented the first compiler for computer programming language & was among the first programmers of the Harvard Mk1 computer.

Hopper popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages & paved the way to develop COBOL (an early high-level programming language). She originated the term "bug" to describe computer glitches & became a celebrated Rear Admiral in the US Navy. https://news.yale.edu/2017/02/10/grace-murray-hopper-1906-1992-legacy-innovation-and-service

How do you feel about physical touch? I mean this is the broad sense, not necessarily in a sexual way, but you can answer however you wish.

Personally, I enjoy it a lot, and find it comforting, but only from really specific people. If strangers or people I don't know well want to hug me, it's okay, but I won't seek it out. I think handshakes are weird. Hey, you want to hold hands with a stranger for a short amount of time for some reason?

sydpolk,
@sydpolk@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I very much like touch. I also very much like consent, which is necessary before any touching.

When I was in my early 20’s, I hustled my ass off. I worked 2 jobs and a side hustle. I drank 8 cups of coffee a day and popped No Doz pills to work at night.

And then I burned the fuck out. And crashed hard.
And it wasn’t worth it.

There’s a lot of folks who will tell you: “grind to the point of exhaustion. Chase wealth and rest later. Make work your only religion.”

That advice is poison. It will leave you broken and hurt and tired and alone.

Constitution

40 years ago, when studying the Constitution in high school, I was alarmed.

  1. Nowhere does it say that there was any such thing as a popular vote. The state legislatures controlled everything, and there is no mention of how they get their power.
  2. They had to amend the damned thing to enshrine basic rights.
  3. They had to amend the thing to give the Federal government the power to reign in states that were infringing on rights.
    1/
sydpolk,
@sydpolk@mastodon.social avatar
  1. And to state that women could vote.
  2. There is no size specified for the Supreme Court.
  3. There is no requirement that the Senate actually vote for proposed nominees or treaties.
  4. There is actually no mention of parties.

2/

sydpolk,
@sydpolk@mastodon.social avatar

There are so many vectors for bad governments to hack the Constitution. The current right-wing radicals have been thinking of these hacks since the John Birch Society and we are seeing them run their playbooks. I thought of most of these hacks in 11th grade, but then, I have worked in software, and particularly QA.
3/

sydpolk,
@sydpolk@mastodon.social avatar

Nobody should be surprised at what is going on. Once you throw “decency”, “dignity”, “decorum”, “tradition”, and “precedent” out, you as a legislature or a court can turn our system upside-down, and there is not much legally we can do.

@RickiTarr As far as abusive work, my first software job was a startup. We were told that until we shipped 1.0, there would be no weekends or holidays. It was supposed to take six months, but that was a joke. We were finally acquired and we finally finished. I got a car out of the royalty settlement. I also got 65 lbs., hypertension, and PTSD. Fortunately, the acquiring company was awesome.
