Hello everyone, it's Friday, and we got a shoutout in @niemanlab Predictions for Journalism, 2024!

From our real-time line-item budget to completely rebuilding our audience on Mastodon and supporting a young, diverse crop of journalists, we've shown time and time again that we are the future of news. We're glad that our effort is recognized by Michael Greshko and the Nieman Lab.

“We're starting to see flickers of this DIY energy within corners of science media. The nonprofit Gen-Z newsroom The Xylom, founded by Alex Ip, covers subjects such as climate and COVID- 19 through a distinctly global lens; by its measure, it's the only North American news outlet that regularly publishes science stories in Nepali.”

Although hormone therapy has helped menstruators regulate their periods and avoid pregnancies when used as intended, women in India have been coerced to take these pills to "purify" themselves to attend religious functions.

During , countries and industries made new commitments to reduce methane gas leaks.

It remains to be seen if these pledges are followed through, but Nigeria is an example of what happens if they don't: wasted methane could've powered the country twice over while leaving a $450-million-sized hole in unpaid fines.

It's Friday! Happy Thanksgiving weekend to those who celebrate.

Check out this visual made by @alexip718 for Ekpali Saint's feature: While Nigeria slashed oil production, it lacks enforceable gas flaring policies or carbon pricing. As a result, the country has flared 5x that of Canada for the 7th straight year, despite the latter dialing up its oil production.

NEW: Nigeria has reduced its gas flaring by a third since 2019. But that is a function of reduced oil production levels, not of any regulatory success.
