I would like to remind folk today of the so-called "Nazi bar" problem:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Nazi_bar

"A space in which bigots or extremists have come to dominate due to a lack of moderation or by moderators wishing to remain neutral or avoid conflict."

You can extend this to Meta. No, plenty of folk joining their AP-enabled service will NOT be bigots or extremists.

But Meta is. Because they already treat the fediverse as a place where "shot-callers" need to be influenced.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@jens is the fediverse a single space though? I don't think there's a way to prevent meta from launching an AP-compatible service?

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@jens I think you lose credibility if you decide to shut them out before the service even exists. But I was around when IE determined what html features a site should report, and when Twitter drowned out rss, so I appreciate the risk. The IE/HTML example gives me hope though. And Google also didn't take over email with Gmail.

Quite quick 'n' dirty, you are welcome to improve upon it. But I thought I'd get it out there, seeing as there's a deadline 'n' all.

GOOGLE INTERVIEWER: why do you want a job at Google?
ME: well, i love writing software
INTERVIEWER: what do you think makes you a good fit for Google?
ME: i have ADHD so i always get bored of my projects and never touch them again
INTERVIEWER: great, when can you start

@LeBonk @Ninji @pluralistic Google has made some pretty good products, but it somehow can't create a consistent offering. Gmail, pretty good. Google docs, awesome tool. And I will maintain that both Google Wave and Google Plus were quite innovative. But then they got abandoned/botched and eventually axed. And the myriad of chat products, well...

Looks like and keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉

This is the way. :blobcatcool:

@csolisr @GoatJamesAz @rysiek what I'm wondering is how compatible these are? Lemmy and kbin, but also those with mastodon. Can I somehow subscribe to lemmy topics on mastodon?

Just canceled my subscription, after the whole paid-API-situation. I really hope they turn around, but I'm not hopeful and I'm certainly not giving them any more of my money. If they continue on the Twitter road, I hope I'll find another community that's so rich and diverse, because I'll sure be leaving Reddit.

@jeffjarvis @ERBeckman @Andy_European @xankarn it's a tactical point, but I don't think whether they deserve to be called fascists or nazis is worth the argument. They are hurting people and damaging society based on a sense of religion-based moral superiority. They are bullies who are knowingly undermining democracy. The Handmaid's Tale never mentions nazis once, and it's plenty scary. For some people though, that is their utopia.

And so it begins in full force.

Today, both Mailchimp and Hootsuite (very popular tools which I happen to use for @thunderbird newsletters and social media) invited me to use to compose Facebook posts, tweets, and emails, respectively.

I won't be using AI tools for writing. But you should know that it's starting to get exponentially more difficult knowing if the content you're absorbing is from a human or from something like .

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@killyourfm @thunderbird it's even a bit irresponsible as the copyright status of AI output is unclear. What if months worth of your social media posts turn out to be plagiarism?

As probably many I am still lurking on Twitter. Some people have a harder time to move, and I think we need to respect that.

But I had to do something to devalue being there and I have started unfollowing people. I started with people who are here (easy) and then continued with people who I didn’t need to hear from.

I now have gaps of 30+ minutes in my timeline and it is so nice to barely get gratification from visiting the site.

Here's my prediction.

With ActivityPub, Mastodon will soon find a challenger that starts getting more attention.

Maybe is will be the *key apps. Maybe it will be Barcelona. Maybe it will be WordPress.

But when this starts happening, this will shake up the community-at-large -- and completely change the direction of the protocol.
