Have any of you bought a dot-matrix printer recently? (I guess in this context “recently” means “in the last decade”.) I’m curious the state of the art.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@anildash surprised to discover that they are still readily available: https://www.123inkt.be/Printers/Matrix-printers/24-pins-matrix-printers-p742068.html

A gen-Z told me today that his generation has largely accepted that they live in a plutocracy, everything is corrupt, and the Musks, Zuckerbergs, and Trumps are just a fact of existence. They accept it as SOP. It's pretty dark, and exactly what GOP wants them to feel: totally hopeless and disinterested in voting. If they let that despair keep them from voting in 2024, they will learn the hard way just how much more there was and is to lose. We need to change their minds. For their sakes.

@shoq @lisamelton That sounds a bit like medieval Europe before the plague.

@film_girl @fraying you can't really avoid the billionaires either. It is worth pointing out that they are very much not your friends.

Heads-up to chaos.social users: This week, Meta (Facebook/Instagram) are releasing their new app, Threads, which reportedly will be Fediverse-compatible.

There are a lot calls to block (or not block) them. We are both too busy this week to make a truly considered decision – sorry for that. Please give us a couple of days: We will sit down and make a call during or just after the weekend.

We'll post here once we've made a decision.

Given the recent situation with various siloed internet platforms, I'd like to point out that if you value your online presence, you need to own it. You don't need any coding skills, the most important thing you can do is get your own domain name. Anything else can me configured/moved/redirected in most cases. Hosting companies will be glad to help. And it literally costs 'less than a coffee a day'.

@ocornut EU cookie law is not the problem. You don't need to ask for consent for essential cookies, like the ones that store your login session ID or the shopping cart in a web store.

Every time you see the cookie popup, it's about selling your browsing data to third parties.

We see these popups everywhere and the reasoning is "the EU did something stupid", but it's the opposite. They caught the thieves red-handed.

"We value your privacy." Yeah, no shit. By putting a monetary value on it.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@wolfpld @ocornut @lisamelton that's not true. You need consent for analytical cookies, which are not necessarily linked to the selling of your data.

My wife and I watched a horror-style film last night and once again the weird child in the film made disturbing drawings.

Just once I'd like to see the weird child write disturbing poetry.

The parent gets called into school and the teacher shows them a well written but freaky as hell haiku.

Em0nM4stodon, (edited ) to privacy

We really have to stop with arguments like “this software you willingly use already abuses your rights so it’s okay for other software to abuse it too”.

This only leads to an even worse situation. Can you imagine using the same argument for physical abuse?

Just stop this please. No one and no software should abuse your rights. And if some already do, the less the better.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@Em0nM4stodon absolutely. I think the whole consumerism approach to the ethics of corporations is deeply flawed. It's unreasonable to expect consumers to conduct an audit of every product/service they use. That approach is undemocratic (only customers who generate the most revenue will be listened to) and vulnerable to all kinds of [color]-washing. (International) regulations and enforcement are key.

Folks, apparently a Norwegian instance (snabelen.no) won’t be “associating with” me because of my position on not welcoming Meta and surveillance capitalists to the fediverse (https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/110621068046632124)

Please feel free to consider whether you want to associate with them accordingly:

@aral Uhm, you pretty much called them a bunch of names and threatened them. Then you blow the response of a single person out of proportion to grandstand and drum up a mob. I don't want to associate with alt-right-inspired witch hunt tactics

This meme went by and I sent the image to my friend who is also a professor of Old English/Medieval Studies, and she texts back, "PLOT TWIST! These are actually Normans!"

And then..."I'm not actually sure that all of those figures are Normans. I'd have to take another look at the Bayeaux Tapestry..."

Seriously, I love it when people nerd out. 😂 Just so much. SO MUCH.

Me: I will try to resist sending you more...

Her: No need to resist. Academics love correcting inaccuracies :D

All this conversation about on feels like the worst parts of geek culture. So technical, without understanding context or what strikes can actually do. My thoughts:

Meta will make a great app for Fedi because it has more money to throw at the task. People will start using that because it's better. It will have QTs and an algorithm. People they want to follow will be there.

🧵1/6

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@loshmi isn't the key not to have only meta to have a fediverse offering, but also Google, Tiktok, Microsoft, and some venture backed startups? Is the question 'do we want for profit capitalist social media companies on the fediverse' or 'do we want meta on the fediverse'?

People who are like "The migration to Mastodon has failed!"

No it hasn't. I literally migrated to Mastodon from Twitter, and I don't use Twitter anymore, but I do use Mastodon every day.

I call that a successful migration.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@rasterweb @TNLNYC lots of prominent folks aren't on the fediverse for better or for worse. Something someone said on Mastodon isn't a thing on the news. Honestly unsure if that's good or bad, but I'd appreciate some more high profile decent people abandoning Twitter and sending a strong signal, that's for sure.

So, I have a mastodon instance with my account. Which is great. Now if I want to post image content a la Instagram, should I just use a different client or set up a separate pixelfed instance? I actually kind of dig the idea to just use another, more image-oriented client.

I would like to remind folk today of the so-called "Nazi bar" problem:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Nazi_bar

"A space in which bigots or extremists have come to dominate due to a lack of moderation or by moderators wishing to remain neutral or avoid conflict."

You can extend this to Meta. No, plenty of folk joining their AP-enabled service will NOT be bigots or extremists.

But Meta is. Because they already treat the fediverse as a place where "shot-callers" need to be influenced.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@jens So you would've preferred that websites block access from Chrome and e-mail servers block all Google-mail? How would that result in anything positive?

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@jens Credibility is very much something you have, in relation to to society at large. You can pretend that others' opinions about you don't matter, but of course they do.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@jens I just want to clarify that I am most definitely not talking about popularity.
