my message for friends on twitter is: please also post elsewhere occasionally. start dipping a toe here and there, you may find you can stand, after a while, on a different platform. this doesn’t have to be an either-or at the moment. by slowly building a following elsewhere you can help build viability of alternatives and also spread info beyond your current silo…

toon,

@seachanger removing the Twitter (X 🤷‍♂️) app from your home screen, so it is harder to open, also worked for me. Also, disable its notifications.

Tried to visit Waterloo (the hill + statue) today - somehow never seen it IRL before.

Only way in is through a museum which charges €23 pp, and no dogs allowed.

Nope

toon,

@jbaert well worth it though, the museum is pretty good (as is the Hougoumont farm).

@sarajw went to Edeka and lidl today and the only options were basically frozen pizza and frozen lasagna. Aslo a very limited non-frozen selection at Edeka. The search will continue another day. 🍝

We all have experience with genuine novelty: in art, and in science. Yet Sam Altman seems to be saying originality is an illusion. There is “remix” and there is randomness and that’s all. I think he’s profoundly wrong.

The reason I recommend @duckduckgo as your default search engine is not only about privacy.

Did you know that DuckDuckGo can transfer your query to many thousands of different, subject-specific online search engines?

This could be Google, Wikipedia, IMDB or beyond that: media, forums, shopping or research sites. Or even XKCD.

You control where the search ends up… with a !bang.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@axbom @duckduckgo Been using DuckDuckGo as my default search engine for years now. It's mostly superior to Google, except for the 'that movie with that guy with the hair, it had a yellow poster, something with a 'W'' kind of queries that require some complex analysis logic.

This will surely lead to a wave of quality content and reduce the overall need for moderation /s (via The Verge)

MikeRiverso, to bluesky

Bluesky’s having a bit of a moderation crisis, which got me thinking about the ways in which the major Twitter clones approach moderation:

has libertarian “free speech at all costs” moderation.
has puritan neoliberal top-down moderation.
has Nazis-to-the-front anti-moderation.
has a server covenant and vote-with-your-feet, accountable community moderation.

The first three are run by tech-bro billionaires. The latter is not. And it shows.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@MikeRiverso I honestly think that in the long run the only sustainable models are Threads (I'd call it the corporate 'Disney approach') and Mastodon's (small, approachable, pragmatic). The whole 'ultimate free speech' idea is just always going to devolve into nastyness because the biggest bullies get free reign and take over.

Thanks to efforts by volunteers Nosamu and bai0, the Internet Archive's flash emulation just jumped generations ahead.

Mute/Unmute works. The screen resizes based on the actual animation's information. And for a certain group who will flip their lid:

We can do multi-swf flash now!

A pile of previously "broken" flashes will join the collection this week.

Threads is the most fun, most interesting new product of the year, and no one in the E.U. can use it, or will be able to use it anytime soon, because their own elected officials passed a law that effectively bans it.

Nice job. Have fun over here in the library.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@stroughtonsmith @gruber Sounds suspiciously like that 'pesky legislation' standing the way of submarine 'innovation'.

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@gruber @stroughtonsmith legislation and regulation are not only useful and worth upholding when lives are directly at stake. Laws to regulate banking, vehicle emissions, and, yes, the use of sensitive personal information, all have a place in creating a fair society. Many companies seem perfectly able to abide by those laws, too. Not sure what the technical acumen of Meta has to do with this. It doesn't grant them a free pass, in any case.
