Infosec.space, less / not maintained?

Hey Jerry,

I appreciate all the work you have done and continue to do in keeping your Mastodon and other services clean and nice. I started playing with the idea of switching over to your other Mastodon instance, infosec.space, which blocks threads.net and probably other thread domains in the future. I have made an account on infosec.space and am keeping an eye on it, but so far, I've noticed that infosec.space isn't as well maintained as infosec.exchange is. I'm sure you prefer maintaining an instance with more users, but many people, including me, don't want to switch because they're afraid of staying on a less maintained and possibly soon no longer maintained instance. Infosec.space appears to be the default Glitch instance with the infosec.exchange configs, but things like the Infosec logo (I think it's called that), updated icons, etc. are missing. Could you explain why this is the case? I and I'm sure many others too would appreciate it if you would change this in the future.

Sirencely, Voxel

@jerry @jerry @jerry (I hope you don't mind that I mentioned all your accounts related to the instances)

jerry,

@voxel the emoji are manual adds, and keep in mind that .exchange has been around for 7 years - and that is 7 years of people asking me for specific emoji. I do need to see if there is a way to automate the synchronization of emoji. If there are emoji you want in the mean time, I can add them @jerry @jerry

voxel,

@jerry @jerry @jerry Oh, alright, hope you will figure out a way to do this, I can imagine how painful it is to upload each emoji ;-; I don't have any specific wishes currently, except the logo's from distros and software would be cool. I also suggest to update the logos of Firefox, Firefox Nightly and thunderbird or atleast at the new ones too, since the old ones are kinda outdated.

Hey 👋 dear Linux Community,

I'm still kinda new to Linux (started using this year 😅) I already made it to my main OS, even if I still missing some things which I used on Windows, anyway. What I wanted to ask you guys, what recommendations do you have for Linux Mint (Cinnamon)? In terms of security, optimization, (a way to make the UI looking modern ;-;) and privacy? I would be very interested in what you do guys to optimize your Linux setup :) I'm pretty technical, so there is nothing which could overwhelm me (probaly).

Thx! 🤍

@linux

moinsdix,

Regarding the UI and the look and feel, I can highly recommend catppuccin as a theme in basically whatever you want. I use it on Mint Cinnamon as well, and find it very good looking!

voxel,

@const_void It's not about choosing distros in anyway, please read the post before you comment. 🙄

Threads will collect data about Fediverse users without consent (and probaly illegal, atleast in the EU)

"Threads integrates with third party services (“Third Party Services”) via an interoperable protocol, and is part of a network sometimes called the Fediverse. In the Fediverse, Threads users can share content with, view and interact with content from, follow, and be followed by people outside of Threads who use such Third Party Services (“Third Party Users”). To enable these interactions between Threads users and Third Party Users we share information about Threads users with Third Party Services, and collect and process information about Third Party Users, even if they don’t have an account on Threads or other Meta Products as described further below."

AutoSpill attack steals credentials from Android password managers

Security researchers developed a new attack, which they named AutoSpill, to steal account credentials on Android during the autofill operation.

Link: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/autospill-attack-steals-credentials-from-android-password-managers/

What I would interested in if @bitwarden and KeepassDX are also affected since they are part of the most used and secure Password ßanagers on Android, sad to see that they excluded them from their testing.

bitwarden,
@bitwarden@fosstodon.org avatar

@voxel Hi Voxel, Bitwarden was not listed in this research and has not been notified by the researchers that it affects our app. We're currently investigating the details and will address it if needed.

As always, users should avoid malicious apps by sticking to known app stores and trusted sources. 🛡️

Dear Linux community..,

I need your help! So, I have Windows and Linux Mint installed as Dual Boot installed, I got 3 Linux partitions, a Root partition, a swap partition and a Home partition. I would like to expand the storage of the Root and Home partition, I tried it via the Tool GParted, I installed it on a USB Stick to use it as LiveOS and change the partitions sizes of Linux, but I faced a few issues:

  • I can only expand the Root partition since the unlocatted storage is above it
  • I can not expand nor move the home partition and it's beyond the root and swap partition
  • I can't move the swap partiton
  • I receive a lot of warnings that it cuold breaking booting into lnto Linux and break the Grub which I definitly want to avoid, but as I took a look at the FaQ how to fix it if it breaks I just was overwhelmed.
  • I'm unable to make a full backup of my linux partitions since I have no external hard drvive I could use for this
  • I got some much importmant stuff on Linux Mint which definitly would be worse losing

So, how can I safely with minimal risk expand the root and home partition?

How to prevent the Brave browser from saving sites you've visited

The Internet browser Brave now offers a "Request Off the Record (OTR)" feature that hides your surfing from other users on your PC.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/2162652/brave-how-to-prevent-the-browser-from-saving-visited-websites.html

Nice to see then rolling it out! It's not a feature which everybody will find useful, but for some people this could be life changing.

voxel, (edited ) to Youtube

is making the watching experience worse on and Microsoft Edge.

I didn't believe it the first time I heard abt it, since it sounded more like a conspiracy theory than a actual thing, but it's true. Google does add 5s timeout specifically to Firefox and Edge users when they try to watch a video on YT. If you want to know more about it, Mental Outlaw make a very good video abt it (Link: https://youtu.be/v4gXhmzQztE ). I think Google did this, to get people moving to Chrome since the majority will think this is a browser issue, nobody would expect YouTube to purposely doing this. In the attached Screenshot you can see that YouTube checks the user agent of browsers to see if it's Edge, Firefox or not. You can bypass this by changing your User agent to chrome.

Edit: Due a lot of people saying a lot of different things abt it, I want to say that I'm not 100% sure abt how exactly this works, there is a inbuild delay by Google, but who is actually affected, there are a lot of different opinions abt it. I wasn't able to verify this myself in LibreWolf, but this could be the case due my intensive hardening I did and this is just a result of what I found in the code and what Mental Outlaw and others shared across social media, if you got different or additional infos abt this feel free to comment and I suggest everyone ti also check the comment section.

pkill,

Not my ss

chicken,

It would be a lot more conclusive if you could find somewhere the isGecko function is being used in association with a delay though, there are other things they could use it for.

Did you know..?

DuckDuckGo has two non-javascript versions of their search engine and both of them are very lightweight, especially the lite version.

You can access them via:

Html: https://html.duckduckgo.com/html

Lite: https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite

Neat, bookmarked.

Transcendant,

To add… if you install the DuckDuckGo browser app on your android phone, it will block all the trackers in your other apps!

Fair warning though, you will likely feel a bit of shock & horror to find out just how often you’re being tracked, and what sort of data these apps are sucking down relentlessly and constantly. Even the ones you haven’t used for a while.

@torproject Changed the Logo of the Tor Browser (aka. Onion Logo) in it's latest release, tbh. I liked the older one more, but the new on isn't bad two, also the "onionize" toggle for the DuckDuckGo Search bar looks pretty cool. If you wanna read the full changelog, here is the link:

Good news! Brave for Android now let's u use your favorite uBlock Origin Blocklists!

Under Settings > Brave Shields & privacy

Can you now add custom filterlists and edit Brave's default selection of the already avaible filterlists. Some of you now that this was possible before too (via brave://adblock) but at this time it had no UI and wasn't a official feature, now you can easily add, remove and customize fiterlists via the the settings.

That’s good to see a comment with a link, that’s what helps people make informed decisions, not simple statements of opinion.

Liforra,

The problem is i would really love using Firefox but i need weird addons and Firefox just doesn’t have them, for example chromegle

For anyone thinking Bluesky would be a nice Twitter aka. X alternative, please read Bluesky's Privacy Policy which I linked down below and think again if you really want to switch or rather try to get used with Mastodon 🤔

Warning to all Brave Browser Users

Blocking variations.brave.com which is used for A/B testing could potentially break Brave's functionalities. For me did Brave's "forgetful browsing" feature broke which seems to be disabled by default if you block this domain.

Stahlreck,

So if you may change some configs, you mayyy be fingerprintable.

You are fingerprintable either way unless you go all out. Going full on Arkenfox/Librewolf mode (with all settings enabled that decrease convenience) you can at most fool naive fingerprinting. For the more advanced one you need Tor.

And even for naive fingerprinting, unless you use Tor or a VPN (which you would have to trust) your IP alone + the fact that you use FF (which a few % of people worldwide do) along with some other basic info about your PC will make you very unique.

Pantherina,

A good VPN is a must of course.

Do web servers support it tho?

ReversalHatchery,

They can’t get info that has been deleted yes, but I think it might be possible to coerce the company into starting to collect logs, legally or not.

CausticFlames,

I disagree that you are inherently in a worse position simply because you dont know enough to take a peek at the code or harden things. I think that again, simply being such a massive project linux gives a trickle down effect to normal users. Even as a normie, you are safer on linux than on windows, full stop. As for github scripts, thats an entirely different subject because yes, open source CAN be dangerous still (just like proprietary can).

zwekihoyy,

what makes you suggest you are safer on Linux?
