I really don't understand what purpose this move serves, especially if the RHEL source code will still be available to people with access to those repos - so it's still kind of public, if you give them your personal info and update that info annually in return? Is it just to have people use different mirrors for the sources? I don't see how this entices someone to buy RHEL or get a Developer Sub who isn't already doing that.

Here's some hard truth about C - It's not going away. It's not that it's perfect, but it is immensely portable and useful. More importantly, no other language has come close to its ubiquity. I'm not saying other languages don't do some things better (they definitely do!), but we're going to be stuck with C for a while yet.

Sweet glory, OpenSearch has gotten complicated to initially setup and deploy via helm.

Some Leap impressions:

  • Nice to not have an "Install EPEL" first step!
  • Getting up and running with container tools (podman, etc.) was nice and quick (no need for adjusting systemd linger for non-root)
  • Interesing that the cloud image doesn't ship with by default
  • No SELinux by default and a little bit of effort to piece it all back together - no default policy even
  • zypper is... OK. dnf's search is definitely more comprehensive.

Just got my first request at work to add @opensuse Leap to our supported internal OS images.

Jenkins' greatest strength and weakness are the same. There's not a CI/CD tool on the planet that comes near it for built in capabilities, but that means that there's rarely ever one way to do anything. It's so easy to get lost in the weeds, especially if you're new to and pipelines in general. My advice is to start simple. Don't enable every plugin in the world before you know what you're doing. Just get stuff working with sh in stages and only look to plugins if you get stuck.

Here's a fun script pop-quiz for you:

[[ true == false ]] && myvar=2 || ( myvar=0 ; myvar=$(( $myvar + 1 )) )

echo $myvar

Bonus points if you can say why :-)

Fun fact: Leap and SLES peacefully co-exist while sharing the same public source code.

The thing about coding with is that it feels like I'm getting paid to do Sudoku puzzles for a living.

Tip for those who are asked to review code with regex: Rather than focusing on the regex itself, ask to see the automated tests that it is ran against and look for gaps in the tests rather than getting lost in the weeds with scrutinizing the regex itself unless there's an obvious significant performance problem.

It looks like my payments just abruptly went up by $1,000/mo. again. So, I guess this will be three times I've had to re-apply for a IDR/SAVE plan with in the past 3 months.

How strongly someone defends and advocates for a dysfunction does not indicate the wisdom of that advocation. People will ride "this is the way we've always done it" all the way to the ground if you let them, so expect resistance when you go against it. Go against it anyway. You might find that some of your current resisters will eventually join you after things start to take shape. When that happens, you'll know that you have now impacted the culture of the organization in some way.
