One of the mechanisms that let relicense their stack was the CLA. Whenever you see an "open core" shop (ie, they have proprietary "Enterprise" versions or extensions) and they require you to agree to a CLA before accepting a PR, be aware that the company may not be using in good faith and may relicense your contributions to be proprietary. Think twice about spending your time and efforts if such a move would bother you.

Because of the @Tusky storm in a teacup recently, I want to personally say that for any project I've donated to, including Tusky, that I am entirely, even enthusiastically, in favor of using that money to fund hiring and training junior developers, regardless of whether their PRs end up getting merged or not. I love that Tusky used the funds in that way and hope they, and others, will continue to invest in mentoring junior developers.

Little boxes on the hillside
Where there used to live a family
Little boxes now a museum
That you can tour with AirBNB

And the people went to school
And then to the university,
Where they all got into debt
And couldn't afford a little box

Little boxes on the hillside
That were bought by an investment firm
Little boxes, little boxes
Sitting vacantly there

(The 2023 version of the Little Boxes song)

"An contributor (who was formerly an ArchLinux user) was so fired up by our community that he now maintains over 600 Fedora and Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) packages, including some widely-used ones like certbot, brotli, iperf3, imapsync, and countless Python libraries, many of them as the primary contributor maintaining them for the greater Fedora and Enterprise ecosystem. EPEL is tremendously important to both Red Hat and users."

A lot of people in the Redis community are now learning about the difference between permissive and copy-left licenses.

If you contribute code licensed with MIT or BSD, anyone can use that code in proprietary software, never release the source or modifications to it, and the only thing they owe you is publishing the BSD license text notice somewhere with the software. You still get attribution, but redis can absolutely legally do this.

Do not include AI generated code in your software projects without following up to get the AI sources and applying the relevant licenses. Do not use AI generated code from copy left or proprietary sources in repos under a permissive license. Give attribution in any case.

Tech problems are fundamentally people problems.

Don't hide behind the algorithm and the protocol when people aren't being treated well. Conway's Law exposes that the algorithm and protocol are a product of the people, communications, and intentions that built them.

If people are telling us they don't feel welcome here, then we need to listen and be open to changing that. If we don't, how can we claim the tech behind our social media is worthy?

Mastodon is more than the Gmbh. The fediverse is bigger than Mastodon. There are already popular community server and client forks of Mastodon. The 501c3 board in the US isn't a bad thing. ActivityPub is a w3c governed spec, and there isn't nearly the same level of scrutiny around w3c's board, because it hasn't been an issue. All that to say, I'm not at all concerned about this.

I just want to clearly say that the telemetry discussions are not a "Red Hat conspiracy". I know tensions are understandably high right now, but this is legitimately a proposal and unlike most changes in RHEL, there actually is an opportunity for community input, and not just for assent or dissent, but also alternative ideas for improvement.

There's no one near interested in trading a working Apple CRT monitor in original box for a working Commodore monitor or 13" Sony Trinitron or comparable color CRT with RCA and coax, by chance is there? It's a Mac-2 era with two row DB-15 input.

I love that the community is so genuinely amazing. The distro is solid, the org is a well oiled machine, and its members contribute upstream to Fedora, EPEL, etc., so that RHEL, Rocky, CentOS users, etc., can benefit from them, too.
