How long do we tolerate #spam from an instance? If new accounts are still popping up to spam us after a week, I think we are justified in concluding that the instance is #unmoderated (#admins can lock down signups), and #block the whole instance. Or am I being too harsh?

This year is the first full year for a long time I have been reading without measuring my reading, and because I haven't been measuring, I've read a lot more. Kindle tells me I've read 17 titles, but I have also read physical books, books in Google Play, iBooks, as well as ePubs I store on my devices and cloud accounts. So there has been a significant increase in my reading activity.

Some people buck against metrics; I am one of those people.

I'm currently re-reading William Goldman’s abridgement of S. Morgenstern’s Florinese masterpiece, The Princess Bride.

I agree that many social media platforms - whether X, Substack, or others - are basically stacked against progressive ideas, and there is little good that can be done by staying on them - since that would would only drive further money into the pocket of Nazi supporters.

However, I do worry about outreach. While the is largely friendly to progressive ideas, will it matter in the long run if what passes for "public discourse" happens elsewhere? How can we bring progressive ideas further into the mainstream, while large political and corporate forces are pushing into the opposite direction?

I had a St. Martin's Day gig this week. My favorite part of St. Martin's legend is the episode where a man comes to Tours, spreading the news that the barbarians are about to attack. Panic breaks out. Bishop Martin summons the man, and discovers that he is possessed by 16 demons. The demons are intentionally spreading lies about a barbarian invasion to create panic and discord in the city...

"Gay as a five cent pencil”
It's not a phrase, but together we can make it one

wolfofthewisp,
@wolfofthewisp@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@GayOldTime @headword the english had the expression ‘queer as a nine-bob note’ (there was no nine-bob note - ‘bob’ is slang for a shilling; 5 new pence, or 5p) - although ‘queer' in this context may mean something like ‘bent’ in the sense of counterfeit (crooked)

wolfofthewisp,
@wolfofthewisp@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@GayOldTime 3 bucks is a lot more expensive… 9 bob (45p) is about 55 cents at current exchange rates! but of course $2 bills were a thing… reminds me of an old dad joke about 2 brothers - counterfeiters - 1 of whom was ridiculed by the other for printing $15 bills, went to pass one off at the corner store and got two 7s and a 35 cent piece in change

Are there any good "feminist" #anime out there? It doesn't necessarily have to have overt philosophically #feminist themes (but it def can), just anime that have well-written, well-rounded leading women characters.

A lot of the anime I consume has mostly hypersexualized women characters (I don't go out of my way for that, it seems like it's just kind of a staple of the medium). For instance, I really like shonens, but they can be super fan-servicey. I'd like to shake that up.

I know there are some great Miyazaki characters, but other than that, I'm not aware of many others. #Recommendations are very welcome.

EDIT: I wasn't expecting so many replies! 0.o Looks like there are some awesome recommendations here, thank you all so much! ❤️

A friend asked for recommendations on folktales where weaving and spinning plays an important role.

The recommended the Ugly Duckling.
When asked why, it said "the duckling makes magical clothes for the prince." 😂

This will probably change in the future, but right now, AI is very, very bad at folklore questions.

(Last time I asked it about mythical creatures in China, and it made up an entire nonexistent chapter of Journey to the West...)
