Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

@pluralistic I recently finished reading The Lost Cause, and wow. I was fully absorbed in reading that book the entire time.

I found it interesting how it presents a different look at the future compared to Walkaway. Obviously, Walkaway takes place in a bit more of a distant future, but it’s still interesting to see. A Lost Cause is closer to the best-case scenario we have right now, where we get progressive politicians into government as well as on-the-ground movements to fix things up in the face of the climate crisis. Meanwhile, Walkaway is more of a worst-case scenario, which seems to take place in a world where change didn’t happen, the oligarchs got more power, and capitalism just continued to degrade.

Would you agree with this? Could these stories take place in the same world, or are they different paths for the future altogether?

@pinhman @micropainter the issue is where those voters are concentrated. I was one of those 18-year-olds who voted last year. However, I was in a safe NDP district.

FPTP is such a pain.

yaygya,
@yaygya@c.im avatar

@pinhman @micropainter and arguably, the UCP did have a majority. It was a narrow majority, but a majority nonetheless. The NDP lost by that many votes, but even if they had won those seats, they still wouldn’t have a majority, and that wouldn’t be democratic.

Rationalizing you’re the good person while blocking housing construction

yaygya,
@yaygya@c.im avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity @TheSaanichDaily that’s an issue here too, but governments like the province of BC and the city of Edmonton have eased those. The other barrier, however, is market housing. Housing prices here started going up when the CMHC stopped building public housing in the '90s.

FYI, still feel a little off today from yesterday's procedure... + have to get more house stuff done in prep for our Big Move to Canada this May.

We just signed with our real estate agent/friend/neighbor to sell our house. Big f'ing deal, to quote Biden.

We've inventoried for Border Guys.
We're slowly packing, numbering boxes with accompanying lists of contents.
We're making our house photo worthy by clearing tchotchkes, giving bigger stuff to Habitat for Humanity.

So yeah, I'm a little busy.

yaygya,
@yaygya@c.im avatar

@GottaLaff @Yup_Its_Holly Port Moody's pretty nice, geography-wise. It's pretty close to the mountains, which is the thing I remember most about it from the few times I visited there (I lived in Richmond). Hope you like it there!

yaygya,
@yaygya@c.im avatar

@GottaLaff plus, there's SkyTrain service, as well as the WCE (although I wish it was regional rail like GO rather than just being commuter rail).
I'm also heading to Metro Vancouver this fall (transferring universities), but I'm not sure where I'm gonna stay. Campus residences have limited spots and rent is expensive, so we'll see.

yaygya,
@yaygya@c.im avatar

@GottaLaff if there's any potential for good news, the province has this program they're supposed to announce within the next few months which will involve building a lot of housing on public land, so things will improve in the long term. In the short term, though... pain.

Trying out Oliphaunt by @anosidium right now. Overall, I'm liking what I'm seeing. There are still some bugs since it's early stages, but the UI is definitely my favourite of the macOS Mastodon apps I've tried.

    @RM_Transit at least Toronto has you! The only big urbanist YouTuber we have in Alberta is Shifter, and he’s down in Calgary.

    I wonder if that will change in the next few years given the direction Edmonton is going in. A few more projects like the 132 Avenue renewal, combined with the new zoning bylaw that came into effect today, and I think this city could be a whole lot more interesting.

    BrentToderian, to random
    @BrentToderian@mastodon.online avatar

    Does your city REALLY want to attract & keep families living in your downtown & urban places? Then your city needs to get real about what it will really take.

    These are the 3 KEYS, in THIS ORDER:

    1. ensure family-sized homes (2-3 bedrooms)
    2. build local daycare, schools & supports
    3. design places & streets for kids
    yaygya,
    @yaygya@c.im avatar

    @dekkzz76 @BrentToderian we need more government-owned and co-op housing so that the incentive becomes creating a good place to live rather than generating profit for a landlord.

    Remember when we let one far-right dude make up the whole critical race theory panic, and then reactionaries passed "anti-CRT" laws that were really anti-diversity laws, so that teachers were afraid to even teach about civil rights and the Holocaust, and then US students' knowledge of the Holocaust dropped precipitously? And it dropped the most where those anti-CRT laws were passed?

    Well, what if we let the same dude make up a whole plagiarism inquisition against the Harvard president?

    @colo_lee @Itty53 @venitamathias @mekkaokereke @mmlvx @valthonis nearly every state without its metropolitan areas would be a red state, except for Alaska, Hawaii, New Hampshire (maybe purple), and Vermont.

    @pluralistic I just read the story. A “Canadian Miracle” like you’ve described seems a bit hard for me to imagine today, especially living in Alberta, where the provincial government is hellbent on preserving the oil industry. Neither of the major parties brought up the climate in the election, despite election season being in the midst of some of the worst wildfires we’ve had. I’m interested to see how A Lost Cause tackles petrostates.
