@rasterweb@kbin.social

I moved to fedia.io (which runs mbin) because it seems to work without constant errors.

You can find me at: https://fedia.io/u/rasterweb

That's really strange. I run 6 Ender-3 S1 printers at work and tend to only level them if there is an issue or we change build plates... maybe once a month at most, and we print a lot. I did go through the process of leveling with the knobs and sliding a piece of paper under the nozzle to get it just right, but when they print well, all is good.

The 1983 film War Games is what taught me it was okay to give up...

"That’s only economical if your time is worth nothing." Well, we should all be able to live lives where we can pursue things that do not have monetary rewards. Obviously not everyone is in that position but perhaps for David Florian exploring and learning and trying things is what makes him happy. Of course for him it probably makes money as well, even if indirectly. The fact that his video got shared means more people will see it, and more views means more money, so there's the value for David Florian. It's also worth considering that in science, it's all about trying things and gathering information that will hopefully lead to new (and hopefully lower cost) capabilities.

I've had one for about a month, and I've been printing nearly non-stop with it. If you just want a printer that works out of the box, prints fast, and prints really nice... It's a great machine. I've owned and operated a lot of printers (at work, at home, at school, at a makerspace) over the last 12 years, and I'm not a fan of the cloud or proprietary hardware but, damn... this thing prints really, really nice... and fast.

I mostly print PLA so the lid is propped open and the door is ajar... Once winter comes to the midwest and my basement is freezing cold I may have to adjust things a bit. I added a Prusa MINI in January 2022 and could not print properly until I added an enclosure.

I have a Prusa MINI and used Prusa i3 machines where I used to work. They are pretty solid, and I do like their open source ideals quite a bit. But I needed/wanted a larger print area for a price under $1,000 USD and the Bambu fit the bill.

Even though I put the 5.1.0-alpha1 firmware on the Prusa MINI I didn't update the profile in Prusa Slicer to take advantage of it! (I had manually made changes to print faster.) That has been rectified and I am now printing with the proper profile to match the alpha firmware.

And it's fast, and quality seems pretty good so far... I'll keep an eye on it though.

@jpk So far so good... did a few more prints and have had no issues... just better quality (and speed).

"It's the content, stupid." - Quick Notes to Supercharge K.Bin

Like you, I'm a passionate user of K.Bin but lately, I'm noticing that things are getting kinda stale around here. The most recent thread in this, the top-level magazine on K.Bin, is 4 days old. Many other top 25 magazines are also suffering from a similar lack of fresh content. I run /m/scifi and it's been continuing to grow...

I've been blogging since 1997 and prefer to write things on my own site, but yeah, the sort of "rule" on Reddit was to not link to your own blog. I disabled Google Analytics this year, and it should also be free of any ads, so I feel okay about linking to my own (long) posts about stuff, complete with plenty of photos and the occasional video, but I'm still not sure if that is frowned upon as "self promotion" even on the Fediverse...

I've been playing this on my Anbernic RG35XX recently and I'm terrible at it but it's still a lot of fun.

Guitar Pedal (github.com)

For the past few days I’ve been working on a 3-D printable footpedal potentiometer to be used in a guitar pedal. It is a parametric model in FreeCAD. It has a top and bottom that hinge together, with a potentiometer that is coaxial with the hinge so that when the pedal is pressed, the potentiometer is rotated....

Very cool! Adafruit posted a foot pedal project that had a potentiometer but I definitely like to see other options.

Can I get firefox to act as two separate browsers? (fedia.io)

Say I have a window of mostly music that I want to open with shortcut a, and a window of work stuff that I want to open with shortcut b. Is there anything I can do to get firefox shortcuts to remember the windows separately? I don't want to use chrome or a different browser as the second window, but that would work for...

I actually run Firefox for all my normal stuff and have a copy of Firefox Developer Edition I use for streaming music and videos so I can keep my "work" and "media" totally separate.

Back On Thingiverse

I found out Thangs locks print files and comments behind an account when I tried downloading my own files from a different device. I’ve decided to leave the platform and going back to my trusty old Thingiverse. I tried to find something new and better but maybe Thingiverse is just the place to be for now. New links below....

Printables is also free of ads... Does Thingiverse still have ads?

Who owns Thangs?

rasterweb,

Looked them up and "Physna is a geometric search engine designed to increase efficiency with CAD design and manufacturing" so yeah, I don't think they come from the 3D printing community and personally I think I'll choose to not support them.

rasterweb,

I make money, but I produce entire products that use a 3D printed enclosure along with electronic components and code that I write. Just trying to sell something you printed seems like a terrible business plan.

Mastodon is getting text search (oisaur.com)

Full text search has been merged in #Mastodon main branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉 It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time. We plan to deploy it to...

I use hashtags on my posts to help other discover them, but also to group my posts by subject. I probably follow 30 different hashtags on Mastodon to help me find interesting posts.

Once again the GOP does not care about who or what the people actually vote for.

I sort miss the charming little Bay View I lived in 30 years ago. I know it's vibrant and thriving now, but many of the weirdos have left (which is a bad thing).

It would be nice... Meanwhile I just run the tap for 60 seconds before I fill my glass.

Great post! We need more people to share their experiences. In the end, I'd rather support a decentralized open platform run by the community that a centralized commercial platform run by greedy capitalists.

TSA intercepts 2 guns, Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (www.fox6now.com)

I really don't understand the person who thinks "I accept that I can't wear my shoes through the scanners or bring a bottle of water but I'm sure they will be cool with my loaded gun." Do you think that you are going to need to shoot someone somewhere between the Chili's in Concourse C and the gate?

rasterweb,
rasterweb avatar

Yeah, I have to take at least 3 knives out of my backpack every time I fly. I guess for some people guns are the equivalent.

Hopefully negative behavior from the police will change in the future.

I installed GarlicOS on the Anberic RG35XX and it's pretty much built-in. (It's using fake-08 to run things as there is not an official PICO-8 engine for the processor used in the RG35XX.)
