I am writing something, and I want to refer to the isoceles triangle formed in a regular n-gon by two adjacent vertices and the center. Surely there is a simple name for it…isn’t there?

Any ideas?

Just finished a re-read of The Music of the Primes by Marcus du Sautoy. Highly recommended if you are interested in mathematics (or computing, there’s quite a bit on public key cryptography). I stopped at A level 20 years ago but can still follow it, and Sautoy is excellent at explaining science to the public.

Mathematics and are human activities, and in a paper
(on sections, the , in particular, and described in the
linked blog post), I was pleased to have reason to quote what
Robert Pirsig said about teaching . I commented,

> What wanted, as an English teacher, was for students to learn
> to write what they wanted. In the end, this would be what everybody
> else wanted, which was quality.

But there's a difference:

> In mathematics, an essential part of is truth, or
> correctness if you prefer. We take this to be universal.

Not everybody may agree on what is good art, but I think they should
agree on what is correct mathematics.

is often presented as a pyramid, where foundations build on themselves, contingent on understanding from prior lessons (algebra to calc to differentials). But oftentimes the most complex tasks for math students isn't calculus or complex analysis, it's doing the basic algebra at the end of it all 😂

A simple but important lesson in statistics from a mathematics professor:

1% of cases resulting in death DOES NOT mean that you have a 1% chance of dying.

Your personal risk depends on your vaccination status, masking, immune system, demographic group, community prevalence and other factors.

I'm a Grumpy Optimist.

Optimist because, although the world is messed up, there are good people with good solutions to many of the problems.

Grumpy because there are so many roadblocks to implementing those solutions. Things go backwards, even when there's a clear path ahead.

Hilbert and Gödel walk into a bar. Hilbert begins to tell the bartender exactly how he wants his drink prepared and all its ingredients. While starting to prepare it, the bartender asks Gödel if he wants anything. “I’m good,” Gödel says. “Thanks to him, I’ve finished the mental construction of the drink.”

For beginners it is often not easy to distinguish between sine end cosine. (Tangent is obviously something different.)

But one can easily remember which is which by looking at the values they take at 90°, or π/2:

c0s (π/2) = 0,
s1n (π/2) = 1.
