TWSheppard, #Plex has sooo many bugs. I tried to build a smart playlist that lists movies not watched in 5 years. It doesn't just match the LAST watched date like it's supposed to, it matches ANY watched date. And there's no hope of it getting fixed because, like Apple, "Plex doesn't fix bugs!"

limebar, Is there a #plex but for epub, PDF, comics, etc with mobile app and TV settop apps (Roku, Google TV, etc)?
mcc, @limebar I'm told by someone who's tried the various options that Comga is the best if you want comics
limebar,
limebar, #plex question:
Remote Access always shows "Not available outside your network" (well it initially shows "available" but soon switches to "not available") yet I can pretty reliably access music using Plex Amp over the internet.
What's going on?
tartley, I've been a really happy #Plex user for many years - have loved it, paid $100/year and invested a lot of time to get my #movies, #TVShows, and #music collections set up the way I want them.
But #enshittification encroaches... 1/3
bhcompy, @tartley
They're continually updating Plexamp, and that's unrivaled in what it does. As far as Jellyfin, Plex still has the best client support by many miles
tartley, @bhcompy I'm glad that you're happy with it. I am not.
jimmyb, I just watched My Feet are Killing Me - Alien Baby (S03E04)!
tojikomori,
peribotsarah, @tojikomori what are the 3rd party players?
I have both running with access to my library already...
tojikomori, @peribotsarah Infuse is the one I've been using for Apple devices. It's mostly good, except that it has a very strong preference for direct play with no apparent override. I have an older Apple TV that struggles with a couple of bigger encodes in my library, so it'd be handy to switch to a transcoded version when needed.
I only recently noticed that Jellyfin has a known clients list which can be filtered by platform too.
TWSheppard, I’m trying to watch OTA TV on #Plex for Roku but it keeps crashing. So I switch to Plex on the Apple TV and it keeps stalling and bailing out back to the guide. Switching channels takes 10 seconds.
My ancient copy of EyeTV running on macOS Sierra is vastly more stable. I have 3 tuners connected and it’s capable of showing and recording all 3 simultaneously while playing back a recording on a 2014 Mac mini.
Today’s devs have never seen a quality product so they develop flaky products too.
ainmosni, Last year, I tried out #jellyfin, and found it great, but it missed one (for me) must-have feature; HDR support in the LG app. This made me stick with #plex.
But as Plex has gotten more enshittified, yesterday I decided to give Jellyfin another try. Happy to say that I can now watch HDR videos on my LG TV.
For the rest, I'm quite impressed with it. The only thing missing is a "skip intro" feature.
ainmosni, @sp4rkr4t Can't say anything about that, in my Plex to Jellyfin migration, identification has worked great.
davidbures, @ainmosni I also have hardware encoding enabled. It's weird, like I said, most of my media doesn't need transcoding, but when it does, it gets transcoded at around 200 FPS. I'm not even playing any ridiculous files, everything is 1080p SDR. But still, the stream very often crashes and lags :(
alisynthesis, Is it digital hoarding to keep 6 seasons of the X-Files on my #plex server because I like to watch a random episode once a month?
etherdiver, @alisynthesis nearly everything after season six is hot garbage apart from a few good monster-of-the-week episodes and you won't miss those
jake4480, @alisynthesis 🤣 I never watched the Doggett stuff as a kid but we watched the whole thing a couple times now and it's such a great ride. Only thing that kinda sucks is the stuff with their kid. But oh well, it's in there.
mhamzahkhan,
ilyess, @mhamzahkhan Glad you managed to sort it out. I made the switch myself and haven’t looked back ever since.
FOSS for the win!
siskourso, Just finished watching Parenthood (1989), will try to drop some thoughts or review in the comments. #justwatched #watched #cinemastodon #plex #whattowatch #moviedon https://trakt.tv/movies/parenthood-1989 #Parenthood #trakt
Tim_Eagon, @siskourso I saw it in the theater with my parents.
blogdiva, BTW #Monsterdon fam: since i've seen #Plex mentioned, any of you using #Kodi?
chris, MusicBrainz Picard is really good, open source and cross-platform. If your music folder is a chaotic mess of unsorted, untagged files, give it a try, it works like magic.
jake4480, @chris 😂 🔥
pootriarch, for last.fm users dragging their feet like me, because all those 'smart' quotes blow up your last.fm stats: there's an option to dumbify them. i wish i had known this a year earlier
#MusicBrainz #LastFM #picard #unicode
jimmyb, I just watched Love, Death & Robots - SHAPE-SHIFTERS (S01E10)!
Aaron_Davis, @jimmyb Is this show good?
jimmyb, @Aaron_Davis Yes, very very good show!
cassidy, Am I weird that I want to put together a #FOSDEM2024 “TV Show” on my Plex server, then organize the rooms into “seasons” to catch up on interesting ones I missed? 😅
bino, @cassidy instead of plex you should use Jellyfin, but except from that it's totally legit
cassidy, @bino I've been meaning to give it a go one of these days…
jimmyb, I just watched Event Horizon!
Xavier, @jimmyb That movie scared the bejebus out of me when it came out.
jimmyb, @Xavier Its definitely a creepy one! First time seeing it for me.
can, I’m looking forward to the enshittification of #Plex.
can, @daniel they’re slowly starting to build a streaming platform out of it. One feature at a time. It’s going to end in them forbidding pirated content a few years down the road. Recently they started offering movie rentals. I’m sure at some point there will be a digital rights holder demanding them to put an end to piracy and they’ll happily oblige.
daniel, @can aah yeah, I noticed that too. It's too bad because me and my friends have a network of interconnected plex accounts that's just really delightful, and it'll be hard to recreate that with other software
ericleamen, Well shiiit… what are y’all doin’ for personal media server software that’s not #Plex? I’m sick of it at this point. https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/07/streamer-plex-launches-its-long-promised-movie-rentals-store/
Verso, @ericleamen Thanks! I am legitimately curious so I appreciate the reply. I mostly use my Apple TV so I turned off all that and it has been ok since.
I think Infuse and Kodi are the ones I hear the most often in the "what if Plex, but not actually Plex?" conversation.
Since we made it to three posts in this chat, I feel like it's time to tag @lisamelton who is absolutely the girl to talk to if the topic is Your Own...Personal...Movies. (;
Dave Graham of Depeche Mode in a cowboy hat and fringed jacket saying "Reach out, touch faith"
lisamelton, @Verso LOL! Yes, I am the girl for that. 😂 @ericleamen
constantorbit, omfg. Remember how I posted a week or so ago that Plex on my Linux hackintosh was behaving weirdly and not playing videos I had ripped from DVDs?
Accidentally just discovered those videos play JUST FINE on my macOS Mac connecting to that Plex server as a client!
Woohoo!
Stark9837, Due to the nature of #Plex and the popularity in the #selfhosting and #homelab communities, it often seems as if most people assume that they are #opensource or on our side. As Plex approaches profitability, we will need to wait and see what the stereotypical and expected greed from executives will lead to. This story might not end well. You either die the hero or see yourself become the villain.
foreverastudent, The writing's been on the wall for a while, it's just a matter of when really. I struggle to imagine how them taking off in the streaming world, though. At least how they would like to.
Stark9837, #selfhosting as a service will never be as profitable as #streaming services. As you can charge subscriptions and have constant income instead of these lifetime passes. They can't have enough new users build #homelabs and buy lifetime passes and remain profitable, unless they literally become a bank and invest their money to grow. So they will need a way to milk already invested users with some kind of service
duskstriker, Send help... small talk has been steering in this direction lately 😵💫📽️💽🧑💻 #addicted #plex #NotMyFault
gerowen, Random observation with my #Plex media server. I have it installed via their official Debian repository. Plex is only ever executed as a systemd service. At no point, that I'm aware of, does the user "plex" ever sign in interactively for any reason.
Yet installing #PlexMediaServer on Linux does indeed give it a default shell in /etc/passwd , and you can log into that account interactively with bash. I wonder if it would continue to work properly if I changed that to nologin ...
jimmyb,
ladyteruki, @jimmyb : ah, I see. Well, I'll be a bit patient then :)
jimmyb, @ladyteruki It should be fixed now ☺️
