@cory and the ‘AI' happens to be a low wage remote worker for the demo 🙈

cory,

@wardgeene it’s a good reminder that the companies pushing these ideas see sci-fi as inspiration, not the warning it’s often intended as.

Google showed off new business AI solutions while promoting their water cooled data centers. Now we find out Microsoft is not only failing to meet their carbon emissions goal, their emissions are actually UP 30%.
I just don't see how this era of cloud AI is going to be a sustainable business model...

Remember all the times Elon Musk said Tesla is so amazing for the environment? The company is being sued for violating the Clean Air Act hundreds of times in recent years by emitting harmful pollutants from its Fremont factory into nearby neighborhoods.

@eagerpebble @parismarx Indeed.

Elon Musk was always about power. Environmentalism was just something he saw could be exploited for that aim.

A lot of people let him off the hook for too many times, ”because he was doing a good thing.”

We got here because people wanted a strong leader, then worshipped him instead of what he did.

This is how we got here. Wishfull thinking and cults of personality.

@cory I guess the next logical step for me to reclaim my data from my cloud provider would be to use something like syncthing to share it across my machines and VPS.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@underlap I haven’t gone quite that far yet (I’m not sure I trust myself with that just yet) — we use iCloud with Apple’s advanced data protection on and I’ve been using 1Password for over a decade now.

I remember the days when people were furious Google was scanning their emails to serve ads. Now we’ve reached the point that everything you send and receive is being filtered through its AI model and you’re expected to love it.

I don't understand exactly where and how you self-host Anytype. Can I get some ?

sharan,
@sharan@metalhead.club avatar

@digitaldonkey Where do you pay for it?

hannsr,
@hannsr@metalhead.club avatar

@sharan from what I gathered you can simply run the app on your local device.

If you want it available as selfhosted, so you can access it from multiple devices, you'll need some sort of webserver. Nothing special really, just some flavor of linux.
But you'll also need to know how to do it - I haven't found any offerings for a managed solution so far.
So this can be some Hardware you own/buy or a rented Server somewhere.
Here are the Docs, maybe those help. https://tech.anytype.io/how-to/self-hosting

Just had a chat with a well respected mini PC manufacturer asking if I'd be interested in "reviewing" their products.

I said "sure!" and recommended one of their newer offerings.

They replied "we don't need promotion on that right now, we really need videos on this older less expensive system going on sale".

Red flag already, but it could make for a fun project video. I say sure.

THEN they reply with all the mandatory talking points to include, what kind of b-roll to shoot, a timetable of less than two weeks, and a list of links I'd need to use instead of my own affiliate links.

I tell them, "that's not a review, that's a promotional video you want to live on my channel". I don't charge for anything called a review on my channel, but I will produced sponsored videos to keep the lights on.

I tell them my rates for a sponsored video, and they IMMEDIATELY balk.

It's really changed my perception of this brand's reputation.

Your washing machine could be sending 3.7 GB of data a day (github.com)

An LG washing machine owner and self-confessed fintech geek has asked the Twitterverse why his smart home appliance ate an average of 3.66GB of data daily. Concerned about the washer’s internet addiction, Johnie forced the device to go cold turkey and blocked it using his router UI. Had the LG washer been hacked, hijacked, or...

Amazon workers in Laval, Quebec have been granted union accreditation after a majority signed cards to form a union.

Now Amazon isn’t just contesting the decision, but challenging workers’ rights to form a union without an election by signing cards.

Google is feeling so emboldened by the AI hype that it wants to take another swing at Google Glass. Not only this product, but the entire company needs to feel consumers’ wrath if it dares to even try.
