Hello again #Fediverse, I may need your #fedihelp. So, here's a list of the Fediverse software I'm about to make temporary accounts for to test all the features and differences:

#Mastodon
#Glitchsoc
#GoToSocial
#Misskey
#Firefish
#Iceshrimp
#Friendica
#Lemmy
#Kbin
#Pleroma
#Akkoma
#Bonfire
#Peertube
#Pixelfed
#Owncast
#Funkwhale
#WriteFreely
#Plume

So, did I miss anything noteworthy? Does anyone have any tips or recommendations before I choose a server for any one of these? I'll probably be going for the most popular server on each for improved federation and maintenance.

Note: I'm using #Sharkey right now and Misskey forks are already overrepresented, so that's why it's not included.

We need ActivityPub platforms that go beyond core social media concepts. @bonfire is exploring modular extensions and access control as building blocks for creative ideas.

Here's my guide to the install process on my little homelab system.

Discover a world of learning with JSTOR!! 🌍📚

I would like to share a website I found the other day, a digital house of knowledge known as JSTOR!

Imagine having millions of academic articles, books, and crucial primary sources right at your fingertips. Whether you're diving deep into historical documents or exploring contemporary studies, JSTOR's extensive library is rich with opportunities for discovery and enlightenment.

@Mehrad
Yes does it properly but still it costs ~1K.
That is why I believe to that scientists have to change the Infrastructure they use for research publishing/review and funding.
We need a scientific network that university/state lends the infrastructure to keep research progress on it, instead of using private journals archiving our articles and data. The Infra is here: we just need to transform it to a social scientific network, hopefully will be one way.

May I suggest adding @bonfire to the mix. It brings in some neat features that others lack.

Join us in testing comments and discussions in #bonfire!
For the next 2 weeks, we're honing our focus on fixing and improving any aspect of this core feature, and we would love to do it together with our community. Let's collaboratively craft a space that fosters both lightearted banter and profound discussions.

At present, #bonfire discussion page lacks any statistical data about the thread, a feature that is pretty common in most of social networks or forums. These platforms typically display a total count of replies, boosts, likes, and participants ....

The word out there on the Fediverse make it seem as if all the different tools (Mastdn/P-tube/Lemmy/etc.) can interact with one another. But this is not the case, as some work both ways, whilst others only one way, or at all.

So made accounts & been testing for past few weeks:

A great article delving into the power of fractal software to empower organizations in post-capitalist worlds and imagining how Bonfire can benefit from adopting the fractal knowledge model itself.

An update on Bonfire

The upcoming Bonfire project describes itself as a social networking toolkit, that allow communities to create and shape their own digital spaces, and have released some new information about some parts of their upcoming project. Bonfire is a fediverse server project in development, with its own take on the microblogging format, and tools to customise it for your community.

Bonfire Classic has been in development (and available for testing) for a while, and the new information is on the other apps that can be build with Bonfire. The team is working on an Open Science version of Bonfire, as well as a Communities version. For the Open Science version, features like integration with your ORCID (‘Open Researcher and Contributor ID’), and better embedding of scientific papers are a part of it. For the Communities version, the team is collaborating with Radio Free Fedi, and the features centre around public and private groups, and topical discussions.

The Bonfire team is also working towards a cooperative hosting network, to make the hosting of a Bonfire more accessible to communities. In September 2023 the Bonfire team indicated to be working towards a 1.0 release in the upcoming months.

@news has a good overview of Bonfire, a modular fediverse platform. It includes post and reply moderation controls that are lacking in other platforms right now.

🔥 Bonfire Offers Framework for Next-Gen Fediverse Platforms
— wedistribute.org

"In Bonfire extensions are not reserved for bonus features contributed by third parties (as is typically the case for many platforms), but every piece of the core software is packaged in an extension so it can easily be forked or swapped out for another extension with a different design or value proposition."

Let's imagine an application that

  • has just one ActivityPub actor
  • no signup mechanism needed, but several admin accounts wanted
  • does not have any publish capabilities (despite making moderation reports)
  • the actor can follow others
  • the application caches and displays remote content, makes it searchable

Could one benefit of building it using or ?

So, I've been using and one of the things I really like are snippets to tweeks things. I wonder if it's possible to add something like this to the user space side of mastodon so users could customize their interface (without adding massive vulnerabilities 😅).
Would be even cooler to combine with the API and apps so a supporting service like moderation tools or addition context could hook into those css tags and display information like some of the add-ons that is doing 🤔
