So... I think I am safe to announce I have been trying to learn

I am not very good (yet), but I am trying my best. I may write a blog post on my approach to this at somepoint 😉

Does anyone have any recommendations on German speaking folks to follow? ( )

Funny #German expressions with food and their meaning

Saftladen (juice shop) – an utterly bad place (not necessarily a shop)

Kabelsalat (cable salad) – chaotically entangled cables

Das ist mir Wurst. (This is sausage to me.) – I don’t care at all.

Hanswurst (Hans sausage) – derogatory, a hilarious or embarassing person

So ein Käse. (Such a cheese.) – This is bullshit.

Käsefüße (cheese feet) – Smelly or dirty feet

Fellow speakers who play and talk about in german. I'm in the process of translating a mod right now and I think I need some opinions.

Would you translate "host" (as in someone who hosts a lobby or server) as "Gastgeber" or does it sound "too german"? Is "host" enough of a common word that you wouldn't question it in a german sentence?

"How does it feel to be a war-crimes reporter whose family bankrolled a nation that’s committing war crimes?

I can tell you.

I covered the genocide in Bosnia for The Post, wrote a book about it, and reported from Iraq & Afghanistan, among other conflict-ridden countries. Also, my ancestors were key funders of Jewish immigration to British-controlled Palestine."

Ever since its inception by means of ethnic cleansing, has remained by far the most dangerous place on Earth for to live, at least insofar as the Zionist settler-colony remains in tact (I will literally immigrate to the State of Palestine when its dismantled, the sooner the better). insistence that without colonizing we're in danger of another is the most pernicious veiled threat I can imagine to come from those who committed some of the worst crimes in all of human history against us.

So this is partially at people that think language doesn't change but also just really cool. I learned recently that R's in english are slowly disappearing. It's especially prominant in American English. R's are increasingly unpronounced.

It makes pronouncing German for English speakers very difficult. So I have been partially rolling my 'r's like a spanish rr as a crutch as I relearn to pronounce r's.

You know what's also really cool? the i in the personal pronoun "ich" in German is empty. You are not pronoucning the i you are pronouncing an empty vowel. It's also what makes German sound so choppy compared to Dutch. Every single space in German is this unpronounced vowel.

Isn't that cool? And proof that language changes constantly even if purists like to pretend it doesn't? It's one of the defining factors that differentiates British English and American English speakers. Weak rs!

I think my apathy towards a immaculately groomed lawn is making my neighbours not like me. Especially the one who cuts their lawn every three days during the summer. 🤷‍♂️

haroha,

@grmpyprogrammer and I thought, we germans were the masters of lawn shaving 😂 During summertime the lawn mowers wake you up in the morning and sing you to sleep in the night (okay, I might be exaggerating a bit 😏. But not by much). I don't care that much as long as it's sorta green outside. I can't help shaking my head when I see an overly groomed front yard with burnt gras on it, because people cut way to short. Gets me every time...

Odd observation and the first of :

Via reading about the theremin, I reached Wikipedia's page about the Sorbs. Out of curiosity I started reading it. Then I thought I'd rather read it in . So I went to the German Wikipedia page about the Sorben and read for a while.

When I was finished, it occurred to me that there are some subjects I prefer reading about in German vs. English. It depends on my original context for those subjects.

By the way, the German word for "mullet" (the hairstyle) is "Vokuhila" (foh-coo-HEE-luh), and it's short for "vorne kurz, hinten lang" which literally means "short at the front, long at the back".

And no, this is not an April Fools' joke, it's already 12:08am on April 2 here in Germany :P
