PSA: #Patreon just announced they're changing their privacy policy to default all of your account info, who you support, etc. to public. You need to go into the settings and disable that. (Check the two toggles at the bottom of the Settings page to off.)
And then send Patreon a nasty letter, because default-open is just a stupid model to begin with, period.
Remember #Patreon set up new on-by-default sharing of your account information with every other Patreon user (and maybe the world)? Remember people posting how to turn it off, because they were using confusing language/dark patterns to try to #trick you into oversharing?
I got the "welcome to the new Patreon" today, and ... they've turned the "Community Profile" setting back on after I deliberately turned it off.
You might see friends today suggesting you support Hard Drive on Patreon today. You know, the funny video games version of The Onion? As a journalist, I will firmly tell you DO NOT GIVE THEM A DIME.
The CEO has pushed out all former staff that have built the site up to its current greatness and has been pushing use of AI to write articles. The staff begged to have a Patreon before basically all being fired, but the idea was refused until now, when it will only line the pockets of a single person instead of hard working writers.
I know they might have provided laughs before, but Hard Drive is a shell of what it was once. Let it die and support the people who actually made those moments of joy possible.
OK, please share this if you can: UK users of #Payoneer (which I know lots of us use for #Patreon payouts!) - a change in regulation or sthing means many UK users need to re-submit identity documents to receive payouts from Jan 1st. If you haven't received your Patreon payout this might be why. Upload your docs, call Payoneer customer services on +44-203-608-0610 https://payoneer.com/customer-disclosures-and-complaints/?_ga=2.65338285.2012463153.1704794931-1394640955.1704794931 and they can put a rush on your approval process if you need the money quickly.
So the Patreon purge is still ongoing. @dracky is the latest casualty that I know of (her account got hit just a short while ago - be sure to go and support her in whatever ways you can!).
Now, however, it appears that even vanilla NSFW creators are getting swept up in Patreon's anti-sex crusade. I know my post might not have much reach outside of kink circles, but if you're a NSFW artist - especially in the furry fandom - you need to LISTEN and start looking for the exit, because we kinksters are - as always - the canaries in the coal mine.
When you let the fandom purity police go unchallenged, and when you turn away from seeing what's happening to various kink artists because you don't like their kinks, it is going to come back to you. Make your displeasure with Patreon known. If possible, find other platforms (I realize this is difficult for non-US/Europe folks in particular; I'm not judging anyone for staying if they have no other options). Refuse to do business with artists who are openly anti-kink.
"Well it's just a bunch of babyfurs; they're gross anyway." First, we make up a very sizeable percentage of the furry fandom that you likely aren't even aware of (I guarantee you there were/are lots of non-kink furry artists on Patreon who were shocked to see how many of their users fled/were kicked from the platform because of this purge). Second, even if you weren't directly affected by the ABDL purge, I promise you it's not going to end with us; they're going to come after you next. Mark my words.
(Please boost for visibility! Non-kink artists need to know this is happening.)
Early #Perl luminary and author (#OReilly camel and llama books, many magazine articles, etc.) Randal Schwartz, a/k/a merlyn, is in dire financial straits.
He needs gainful #employment NOW of any kind, and although his #programming language of choice now is #Dart and the #Flutter framework, he’s willing to fall back on his @Perl chops.
GitHub has partnered with the funding platform Patreon to support open-source developers. The collaboration between the two platforms allows individuals and organizations to link their GitHub and Patreon accounts, so sponsors can handle funding through Patreon while receiving recognition for their sponsorships on their GitHub profiles. Open-source software development is often a labor of love, and funding can be challenging, as most contributors are unpaid or underpaid. This partnership aims to help these developers gain financial support for their work. According to Tidelift, over 60% of open-source maintainers describe themselves as "unpaid hobbyists."
People who have never done #SexWork love to hold opinions about it: and when it informs policy and public opinion, ignorance about our work causes actual sex workers enormous harm.
New #paleoart at #Patreon! Here's an image that I'm sure won't cause any upset at all among tyrannosaur fans: giant azhdarchid pterosaurs drive T. rex away from a juvenile Triceratops carcass. High-res version, WIPs and discussion here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/103222863#sciart#dinosaurs
Would someone who uses #Liberapay maybe be able to answer a question? Big platforms like #Patreon are theoretically cutting out adult content due to payment processors not wanting to be a part of it, right?
How does a platform like Liberapay avoid this becoming a future issue? With a lot of kink artists being suddenly removed from Patreon very recently in a purge, I'm curious if I should be telling people Liberapay is the right alternative they'll be safe on forever.

The $8/mo donation I make is the same that Birdsite is asking for, but is so much more valuable here. A small price to pay for a space that is welcoming, inclusive, and safe for our community.
Ok, it's time again for people with an opinion and $3 to tell me which tiny art machine to make next. The fun theme for this poll is "The Keyboard Is The Computer" and was suggested by @ducksauz (thank you).
The options are:
Following a request from me and some colleagues, my company is about to become a (hopefully) significant supporter and contributor of @derickr, awesome creator and maintainer of @Xdebug 🥳
As a daily #PHP developer, it's a tool I could not work without, so I'm happy we could do a little bit to help. 💪
Episode 3.4: #Capitalism, #Community, and #Friendship with Joey Ayoub is out now to our Patreon supporters, with a general release coming next Monday.
Why is it easier to imagine a zombie apocalypse than it is a generative, #sustainable future? This question drives Joey Ayoub, host of The Fire These Times: in fact, this season of his #podcast is partially about solarpunk and #generative#futures. Tune in today to listen to @arielkroon and @joey discussing imaginative expansion of solarpunk, the “realist” impulse, climate anxiety and grief, and community building in a #crisis. Also The Office. Trust us, it’s an important part of this whole conversation. Check it out and support us here:
The more I experiment with #Mastodon and #ActivityPub more broadly, the more I am convinced that it’s possible to build a #Patreon replacement on the #Fediverse
Patreon is a closed platform, but it’s a key tool for many content creators to make a living out of their work: writers, video makers, podcasters, and so on
A Fediverse alternative would basically bridges a payment system with tiered access based on payment status
Even with #Zapier, I think it could already be done!
Morning my pet. Today's breakfast is a deliciously out of season pumpkin cinnamon parfait. Remember that rules like these do not define you and you can enjoy an out of season treat if you want to. The only rules that define you are the rules that I give you, my pet. Now make sure you have something delicious for breakfast, dear. ❤️
Auf der Suche nach einem Publikum gehen einige Medien den Schritt ins Fediverse. Ein Versuch, unabhängiger von den großen Gatekeepern zu werden.
