Ruby Bridges who desegregated New Orleans schools at age 6 in 1960 says it’s ridiculous that her books are banned because white children’s feelings could be hurt.
Yesterday was #WorldBookDay. I missed posting about it b/c I was preparing for a class discussion on #Morrison's #Beloved, a book I've read & taught many times. It always brings me to my knees (& tears). The students were blown away & we had such a good conversation about the names in the book, representations of the body (Baby Suggs speaks about loving one's body even as we read about it flying apart at the seams), & #aesthetics - the lyrical beauty of the narrator's voice.
At the ALSO fundraiser authors read from #ReadBannedBooks. My 15 year old daughter and I—in honour of #Holocaust survivors, and in defiance of the rise in #antisemitism and all forms of #hate globally—will read from Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl.
ALSO is an adult learning program in English and ASL, focused on skills for employment, further education, civic participation.
After being fired for opposing book censorship, three librarians have filed workplace discrimination claims with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Visited some great Little Free Libraires in Bethesda this morning. One library was Snoopy's Doghouse with a tree for Woodstock. Another was Jane Austen's house.
We're leaving a copy of my book in each one. I'm tired of having boxes of books in a storage unit. Figure it's better to just give them away
All these red states are now boasting about how they are withdrawing from the American Library Association. They aren’t just satisfied with banning books, they want to get rid of the places that keep and lend them, too. The Christian Right is on the march.
Carl Sagan once warned us of the “dumbing down” of America. He warned of a time when our “critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”
That time is upon us. We must do all we can to prevent that darkness from taking hold.
Tomorrow setting up the traveling bookstore at local farmers market. In a county where the county commissioner says you can’t trust voting machines because look at airplanes, they are constantly falling from the sky, and of course there is a lot of open carry, I feel selling affordable books might make a difference. Maybe a kid or a teenager or an adult will read something that gets them thinking - really thinking. #travelingbookstore#reading#ReadBannedBooks#rural#montana
