“If you’re looking to understand the philosophy that underpins Silicon Valley’s latest gold rush, look no further than #OpenAI’s #ScarlettJohansson debacle”
Earlier this week, Scarlett Johansson released a statement that said she had been approached by OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman to voice a ChatGPT persona. The actress, who famously voiced an AI assistant in the 2013 film "Her," she said no, but OpenAI went ahead and released "Sky" anyway — a chatbot which Johansson herself stated sounded “eerily similar” to her.
The actress has hired legal counsel and demanded an explanation, but could she take it further and does she have a case? @WIRED has spoken to lawyers to find out how this could all play out in court.
Good. Biden's appointment of Altman to the AI safety and security board is up there with his Garland and Fauci appointments. Bad decisions.
The man has been accused by those who know him in his own inner circle of being "not consistently candid" and if there's anyone who should not be deciding AI risk issues it's someone not candid.
"Scarlett Johansson scandal puts OpenAI's Sam Altman back in the hot seat"
An ad agency I was once associated with ran radio ads in the early 2000s that used a Donald Sutherland sound-alike — and he was really good. Some voice-over guy in Toronto or Vancouver who basically made a living doing this impersonation.
So, I’m confused by the whole Scarlett Johansson/Open AI flap. I keep reading that #OpenAI paused/removed the #Sky voice, but do they mean the new Sky voice they recently demoed, or the old Sky voice that has been part of the product for months and also sounds like ScarJo?
If it’s the latter, that would be kind of a shame, because all of the other voices suck.
(Although only “kind of,” because I don’t use the feature day to day.)
Same Sam Altman that Biden tapped for the national AI safety and security board. Said several times a while back that decision was a mistake. Maybe she will sue, seems to be in the right here.
"Scarlett Johansson says OpenAI copied ‘Her’ voice after she said no"
I... don't know what Scarlett Johansson's voice sounds like. (well, I do now - "like the old OpenAI voice") Checked imdb and I guess Lost in Translation is the only thing I've seen her in and that was > 20 years ago, so not helpful 😅
"TechCrunch confirmed that Johansson released a statement later on Monday saying that OpenAI approached her in September about supplying the voice, which was first reported by NPR correspondent Bobby Allyn. In the statement, she said that she declined “after much consideration and for personal reasons” and was “shocked” when she heard the released demo."
Earlier today, OpenAI announced that it would no longer be using a its "Sky" voice for its new chatbot. They didn’t say why, but the voice sounded a lot like Scarlett Johansson’s, despite the fact that the Hollywood star had declined to offer her voice to the company. #ScarlettJohansson is threatening #legal action against #OpenAI for copying her #voice for its latest #AI model, GPT-4o, which will be accessible through #ChatGPT.
In a statement provided to The Washington Post by Johansson’s publicist, she claimed that she received an offer from OpenAI CEO #SamAltman in Sept to be the voice of its AI system. Johansson… declined….
“9 months later, my friends, family & the general public all noted how much the newest system named ‘#Sky’ sounded like me. When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered & in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends & news outlets could not tell the difference.
“Mr. #Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word ‘#her’ - a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system…” #ScarlettJohansson’s statement continued.
The “Sky” voice was one of 5 voices #OpenAI unveiled in September when it added an audio conversation mode. WaPo noted at the time that “#Sky” sounded similar to Johansson.
On Sun… #OpenAI suspended the #Sky#voice & posted… how the company trained voices used for the audio capability in its more advanced #AI. The company said it paid #VoiceActors “above top-of-market rates” to participate in recording sessions that were used to produce the voices.
…In her statement, … #ScarlettJohansson said #SamAltman tried to contact her 2 days before the demo. But before they could communicate, OpenAI demonstrated the product, forcing her to take #legal action.
Could this be Scarlett Johansson's greatest performance? The Tony and BAFTA-winner and double Oscar nominee appeared on SNL this week as Alabama senator Katie Britt. NBC has the video as well as Mikey Day's take on President Biden's State of the Union address.
