Interesting to see Microsoft referring to data centers as “AI infrastructure,” further abstracting what they are and the resource demands that come with them.
「 Arm may be set up for a good decade long run in the datacenter, at the edge, and in our client devices, but watch out for RISC-V. Ten years from now, we might be writing the same story all over again, with one more historical ring wave added. In fact, it is hard to imagine any other alternative on the horizon 」
"We must think more deliberately about which technologies are necessary to build a better world and where it actually makes sense to roll out digital tech or AI tools. Those democratic deliberations can’t just be based on the marketing claims of tech companies, but need to account for the real impacts and material footprints of those technologies."
One customer, Criteo in France, was actually able to close a #datacenter by switching to #Aerospike.“They’ve gone from thousands of nodes to hundreds of nodes, and that’s allowed them to get real savings,” Hensarling said. That’s not just a financial benefit but a #sustainability benefit as well. “They’re actually more able to comply with the demands to be greener, to be conscious of energy usage, and be mindful that you can accomplish more while doing that,” he said.
“The Cloud now has a greater carbon footprint than the airline industry. A single data center can consume the equivalent electricity of 50,000 homes. At 200 terawatt hours annually, data centers collectively devour more energy than some nation-states.”
Tech giants are building massive data centers around the world that require a ton of water and energy. The AI boom will only accelerate it, but local opposition is growing.
I spoke to @slehuede about a group in Chile that fought a Google data center and why the tech industry’s plans must be challenged.
“The making of critical data center studies,” Dustin Edwards, Zane Griffin Talley Cooper and Mél Hogan have finally published their piece in Convergence. Countering Truth made by Big Tech.
"After quizzing these companies about data practices, I learned that most are sharing what’s happening in my home with Amazon, too. Our data is the price of entry for devices that want to integrate with Alexa. Amazon’s not only eavesdropping — it’s tracking everything happening in your home."
#GeoffreyAFowler, 'Alexa has been eavesdropping on you this whole time'
We are talking about one of the single worst corporations on earth.

That'd be rich, given they're a primary AI #oceanBoiler. To repent they ought build another fash #datacenter to serve more training data through their Eth blockchain to CloudGlare for serving hcaptchas to hapless humans to train auto-mil drones.
Almost 10 yrs ago it already started w/ 3x #HP#DL385 G5 (3rd in another rack). Each of them w/ 64GB RAM and 2 CPU setup. Nowadays, even larger VMs already come with this amount of RAM. I love building my own and independent #infrastructure and #AS.
