Nerd alert: Far be it from me to encourage "polar vortex" talk, but when experts talk about a warming winter Arctic driving cold air outbreaks into the mid-latitudes, this is exactly that kind of mid-atmosphere pattern envisioned: warm airmass high pressure at high latitudes with the core of the cold airmass pushed south.
