If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. If you're fleeing #Tumblr and checking out the #fediverse, welcome! I hope you find a home here. You have quite a few options with #Mastodon, #Miskey, #Firefish#Sharkey (I'm posting this from sharkey.world), and the practically thousands of instances within those. Each have their own flavor and features, so don't feel you have to settle on one off the bat. It's not unusual to see new users sign up on one instance, then eventually move to another, then another before they find the community that fits them best.
Looking for something more "bloggy"? Bear Blog and Pika are two services offering simple blogging tools with an emphasis on "small blogging". They are unassociated with the major blogging platforms and offer a fresh alternative to them.

Bleary-eyed and jaded, she decided she'd had enough. The memories of better times lingered, but she realized they were just that, memories. However, there are still a LOT of things about it which should be concerning to users, and which should cause them to be much more cautious when selecting their first instance or moving to another.
Below are the three which prevent me from fully buying in to this being the "end game" of social media.
I suppose I am your typical middle-aged white cis male tech nerd living in the north of England. But before you run screaming, I do try very hard to have some appreciation of the difficulties and hopes (and, sadly fears) of minority groups.
I mostly try (and sometimes succeed) to keep away from over-political posts, preferring not to drive myself and others into constant despair.
Instead I try to find lovely people to chat with (not hard on the #Fediverse), about #80s and #90s#PopMusic music, the daftness of my #cat, #films and TV that I have enjoyed, and whatever other frothy, lightweight, inconsequential things come to mind.
I run my own Mastodon server which has lots of free space for new accounts: do ask if you'd like to try it out for size!
I am happy to share that @europarl_en is launching a pilot project of free period products for visitors.
Period products as intuitively essential and important as toilet paper, soap or hand towels, and should therefore be made as readily available.
We believe that menstrual security should be a collective issue. It is a question of dignity, solidarity, and health!
