The most important ones:
Make an #introduction post littered with hashtags that are relevant to your interests. People with those interests are likely to follow or boost your introduction for more visibility.
Follow Follow Follow! Follow people that seem interesting to you. It's the basis of "federation" across the fediverse and helps your toot travel to other instances.
It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.
It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.

Receiving faves does not make my posts more visible.
Apparently, Tumblr's CEO stepped on his crank and outed himself as a TERF. We does not abide the TERF. No we doesn't.
If you're fleeing #Tumblr and checking out the #fediverse, welcome! I hope you find a home here. You have quite a few options with #Mastodon, #Miskey, #Firefish#Sharkey (I'm posting this from sharkey.world), and the practically thousands of instances within those. Each have their own flavor and features, so don't feel you have to settle on one off the bat. It's not unusual to see new users sign up on one instance, then eventually move to another, then another before they find the community that fits them best.
Looking for something more "bloggy"? Bear Blog and Pika are two services offering simple blogging tools with an emphasis on "small blogging". They are unassociated with the major blogging platforms and offer a fresh alternative to them.
First off let’s be clear: no one gets to tell you how to Mastodon, culture here and everywhere is dynamic and we re-make it together by posting everyday.
but in the interest of maximizing pleasure and minimizing frustration, I wanted to offer a few tips for having fun and finding friends that you can take or leave…
For those new here from #twitter to #mastodon may I suggest @FediFollows as well as @feditips. If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. I see another exodus is underway. Feels like now is a good time to welcome the newbies. I was like you once, so here's some tips. First and foremost, find as many people as you can that you either know or follow on Twitter, then follow them and look through their follows for other cool people. Find federated platforms that you like the look of and then follow their members or migrate there once you find your forever home. There is no algorithm forcing things to be popular, there is just stuff that you like and want to see, and it is your responsibility to keep up with people in your orbit. It may seem daunting on the outset, but I have genuinely never been happier on social media, so just stick with it, find peeps that you like, and be your weird, wacky selves. I love you all! 😊
New to Mastodon and confused about why you don't see anything on your home feed and nobody interacts with your posts?
Follow people. Fedi has no algorithm beyond the "explore" tab. It works completely by follow relationships. The more people you follow with similar interests, the more likely they'll follow you back. Not to mention your home feed will be filled by their toots.
Hashtags. Full indexed search is EXTREMELY new and some instances haven't upgraded yet. Even then, some users don't want EVERY toot of theirs to be discoverable so they turn that feature off. However, Hashtags are always searchable for public toots. Litter your posts with relevant hashtags so people can find your toots!
