So many ideas for what I could do to make something of myself, close yet so frustratingly away from being a coherent thrust in life...

People are ridiculing this bit of advice volunteered by one privileged feminist, but TBH she's right; if you want to "transform your life" it needs to be something big and upwardly mobile like this, that you can get into incrementally. Anything else is a waste of your time.

@mxtthxw Admittedly I'm a bit biased, since the "learn jousting!" suggestion sounds a lot more fun than e.g. the one about taking a cold shower every morning. 😄

Can't help but wonder: I never get any sales, never get any comments, never get any click-throughs...does anyone even read this stuff I write, or am I just wasting my time? It all seems so pointless...

adamasnemesis,

I notice other people when they go to the effort to write things and post things they actually get sales, click-throughs, readers who comment, and all that good stuff. Me? Nobody ever even wants to engage with my works at all.

My whole life has been a pattern where literally nobody has ever truly liked me or really wanted me. When I became active on here I hoped it might be different, but no...nobody wants me or likes me online either. There's something about me that's just defective... 😔

Lovely Gladys Cooper poses in front of a romantic gate, all dreamy-eyed and arrayed in the most delightfully long braided pigtails, dolled up with a romantic dress and a big flower at her waist. Might make a fantastic inspiration for a Christmas look this year...

It really drives me nuts to see videos where the creator is trying to demonstrate something and is obviously struggling to do it with ONE HAND because they're using the other hand to hold their damned phone! I've even seen people trying to untangle wildlife from dangerous situations (a noble cause, indeed), but only using one hand for the same reason, making the task far more difficult.

my idea of having a conscience and a sense of morals permits a wide range of views to be expressed, but you have to be civil about it.

if you came on here and began talking like Trump or Xi Jinping, i wouldn't raise an issue about it.

but if you start being rude to people, you're out of here.

i think one of the things that sets the Nordic countries apart from the Anglosphere is that you can't hide stuff behind fanciful language here. i mean, you can, but the more fanciful it gets, the more foreign it comes across as, and the more distrust there is of it.

the Vikings had no polite words for a penis or a vagina.

penis was "kuk" and vagina was "fitta" and no other words existed, so you either said it or you didn't. these words aren't considered polite these days but that's all the Vikings had.

English masks itself more. hides behind veiled words. Nordic languages get a bit more real.

@moffintosh What I find astonishing is that it takes $1000 a month to live in Texas. Texas. Like, it's a place that has no desirability whatsoever, yet it's unaffordable to live on your own there with half the jobs available for people to work at in this country. In what world is this economy even sustainable, much less acceptable?

One of the creepier tech-related incidents I remember was many years ago when I wanted the Sam's Photofacts (a third-party creator of device specs and schematics, etc.) for a very old portable TV. Way out of date, but I was trying to help someone with it.

I mentioned to a friend that I was looking for old Photofacts, but I did not say anything about the TV. He scribbled an address on a scrap of paper, an address locally here in L.A. "Try him," he muttered.

I drive over. It's a small unmarked storefront. I go in, the bell on the door rings. Sitting inside, like the caterpillar in "Alice in Wonderland", is this little guy perched on a stool, with immense stacks of paper surrounding him everywhere. Total mayhem.

I walk up to him -- knowing that this was a waste of time and really wanting to get out of there -- and asked if he had the Sam's Photofacts for that specific very old TV model.

Without saying a word, he reached over to the pile of papers right next to him, took the TOP item off the pile, and silently handed it to me. It was the ancient one I needed. Stunned, I paid him the amount marked on the item, and left with it, not completely sure what had just happened.

When I drove by there a month later that storefront was something else entirely. He was gone.

"Ad blockers are unethical—ads are how they pay to keep the lights on!”

Exactly. It's how THEY pay to keep the lights on. It's not how I pay for anything. I didn't agree to see ads, although I'm ok with some ads; what I definitely didn't do is agree to be tracked and profiled and have arbitrary third-party code running on my computer just so I could read this awful, pointless, SEO-ified shitfest of an article that doesn't come close to answering the question I was googling.

adamasnemesis,
@adamasnemesis@social.adamasnemesis.com avatar

@maxleibman Yep. They have the right to request to display ads but I have the right to refuse to accept them; after all, it's my display and my device, not theirs. I have the right to modify what it shows me to my heart's content.

It feels like, to me, that social media has become an issue to those in power. So we've been seeing a large effort by "them" to do what they can to destroy the ability of social media to democratise power in the truest sense.

Twitter turned into a shitshow.
Reddit did the same.
Facebook's always been shit.
Tiktok has been branded "a Chinese spy app"
Telegram's encryption & privacy (along with Signal & WhatsApp) are being attacked by right wing govts daily.

Just seems sus 🤷
