🇦🇺 Australia: COVID keeps killing more people every month than flu does in a year.

“In other words, there were three times as many confirmed Covid-19 cases as influenza cases,” Adrian Esterman, professor of biostatistics at the University of South Australia, told TND.

“And the death rate associated with Covid-19 was about four times as high as for influenza.”

He said it was “completely crazy that face masks are not mandatory in all health care, hospital and aged-care settings”.

Does anyone know of a report somewhere of “average number of sick days per capita per year”?

It's only anecdotal, and may be subject to confirmation bias, but I'm sure I'm seeing more colleagues off sick for longer than I have done in the past. (It's also possible it's just because I can see status in Slack.)

New research shows gas stove emissions contribute to 19,000 deaths annually

California is considering a law that would require warning labels on gas stoves.

mmalc,

To bring a point up to top-level, for those who assert that "all people need is a hood over the stove”: It doesn’t necessarily vent very well:

"Pollutant capture efficiency (CE) ranged from <15% to >98%, varying across hoods and with airflow and burner position for each hood.”

https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/es3001079

And of course that's only if people switch them on.

Anyone else find it disconcerting that the US has to "press China and Russia to match U.S. declarations that only humans, and never #AI, would make decisions on deploying nuclear weapons?" Handing nukes to AI could:

  • Result in a War Games-like realization no one wins🎉 ,
  • Allow AI to figure whoever strikes first is mostly likely to win😱 , or
  • Allow AI to realize we humans are dysfunctional and destroying the planet and decide Earth is better without us🤯 .

California state transportation officials are looking for drivers to participate in what will likely be the final test on a new system aimed at replacing the gas tax with a more reliable funding source based on the number of miles you drive, not how many gallons your car guzzles.

This latest study is looking for participants statewide who will pay the mileage-based travel fee every month, but also receive a credit for the gas taxes or EV registration fees to ensure they aren't double-taxed.

I think the mistake a lot of people make with so-called AI is in assuming it's an innovation analogous to like, the internet or automobiles, when really a better point of comparison would be DDT or radium toothpaste

mmalc,

I think a mistake a lot of people make with AI is evidently not knowing anything about its multi-decade history and the benefits it has already provided and will continue to do so, and basing inane comments on a small fraction of its scope

FTC fines Razer for every cent made selling bogus “N95 grade” RGB masks

“Deceptive advertising and misinformation posed a risk to public health."

mmalc,

I'm glad there's been some action on this, but a $1M fine is pathetic.

This was knowingly and willfully endangering public health (as well as probably contributing to the fallacy that “masks don't work); there should be jail time for those responsible.

Take advantage of every opportunity to socialize safely. On a gorgeous (but windy) 80-degree day in Milwaukee, we dined in an empty restaurant next to open window ( 2:30 pm lunch with CO2 at 500), had cocktails in a bar with open garage doors (CO2 450), and enjoyed an electric cello concert outdoors at a bar. There's never zero risk, but I believe I can effectively minimize risks with smart decisions.

(This may be yet another advantage of tiltable PV in agrovoltaics that can go vertical to let the tractors go in between).

" the biggest player again as renewable records smashed in , reach 156 pct of load

Last week battery storage became, for the first time, the largest supply source in the evening peak of what is one of the world’s largest grids. On Tuesday, it discharged more than 6 GW for the first time, providing up to a 25 per cent share of supply, and was the biggest provider on the grid for two hours."

Usefully the figure includes residential as well as commercial and utility-scale installations.

Residential seems to be under-emphasised in general. Given changes to net metering tariffs (quite apart from grid unreliability), it really makes sense for Californians to pair solar installations with batteries, and for California to subsidise them.

And then to better support residential B2G for “staggered" delivery.

Put a woman on one of the platforms, and an aquatic fowl on the other. If the beam remains horizontal, the woman is a witch.

Might be wrong here, but seems like this may be a bigger deal than a clerical error as is being widely reported:

Rejected and ‘returned for correction’: Docs for Trump’s $175M bond get bounced >>> https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/rejected-and-returned-for-correction-docs-for-trumps-175m-bond-get-bounced/

It may be that the bond company didn't report their financials because they have insufficient collateral to secure a bond of this magnitude. In which case the bond is no good, Trump doesn't have a bond, and he is out of time.

Let's see how this gets resolved...

“The name [Bradford] is derived from 'broad ford' because of the river crossing here, which was wide and convenient for dumping stolen Escorts. Originally a small Saxon village, little of the original settlement survives, apart from a fine 15th century cathedral, which took 194 years to complete. A construction period of nearly two centuries may seem ridiculous to us, but of course builders were a lot quicker in those days.”
