If you were waiting to buy my in-depth history of and , NeuroTribes, it's now really cheap at Amazon. The New York Times called it "Beautifully told, humanizing, and important." https://a.co/d/fDNysnr

Absolutely agree! A non-fiction book so well researched and written that is as captivating as a novel. NeuroTribes takes a difficult subject that has been clouded with vauge assumptions and shines light upon its history with great clarity, insight, and compassion.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the fascinating connections and interactions of human consciousness.

As someone who covers manufactured outrage campaigns for a living, journalists desperately need to learn how to properly cover these campaigns.

These grafs in NYT don’t give nearly enough context to who Chris Rufo is, or his agenda/track record. Quoting ppl like Rufo as neutral/honest actors is a huge mistake not only bc it launders their abusive, ideologically driven campaigns to mainstream liberals, but also bc it leaves readers less informed abt the motivations behind these attacks.

This week in 2020, Trump declared that no one could have expected a pandemic. (He'd disbanded Obama's pandemic response team in 2018.) When reporters pointed out that Peter Navarro had written a memo warning of a -19 pandemic in January he said, "I didn't read it. I didn't look for it either."

Know your teen slang: “rizz” is short for “reasonable,” used to underscore the younger generation’s reverence for practicality. Someone with “serious rizz” is highly valued for their common sense and probity.

TODAY: Biden announces major action on student debt relief.

What's in the news?

Trump's shifting abortion stance, Trump suing his judge, Trump's fundraising claims.

TOMORROW: Look for another story about how voters don't feel like Biden's done anything.

See how this works?

That company that lent Trump the money for his bond? They're tied to a firm that has been scrutinized for all kinds of shady deals including, according to a 2017 NY Post piece, suspected money laundering violations related to "very high level foreign officials from major oil-producing countries and war zones." https://nypost.com/2017/03/31/feds-probe-bank-of-internet-for-possible-money-laundering/

I'm (too) slowly working my way through Ian McDonald's Hopeland. Slow partly because I'm not spending enough time reading but also because I keep stopping to savour the prose. This is from page 196 describing two musicians playing together.

"Nothing about this music should work but it is joyful and glorious and spiked with shards of eternity."

That sentence, wow. It stopped me in my tracks.

It's also a perfect description of the Grateful Dead at their best.

This border drama is wholly a Texas MAGA Republican distraction for them to scare racists into voting for them so that they can pass unnecessary tax cuts for billionaires. Go down the road a few miles and the border gates will be wide open so that Texas Republicans can get cheap exploitable labor under-the-table.

As a Californian, I don’t even think about “the border”. In fact here is a typical game of Volleyball using the Southern border as a gate.

Hi Fedi Family,
In 2008 Californians voted for Prop8 that defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman in the California constitution. While this was defeated in courts this draconian Prop8 language is still in the California constitution. Justice tHomas and the right wing SCOTUS is openly hinting at destroying precedent and trampling rights. If they overturned Obergefell - the Prop8 language in the California Constitution will act as a “trigger law”, raining havoc on queer families like mine across California.
Please spread the word to vote “YES” to repeal Prop8 (2008) from the California constitution in Nov 2024. Talk to your friends, family and colleagues about it.

Boosts appreciated.

The evidence could not be more clear: abortions with mifepristone, one of the most studied drugs in history, are extremely safe. The few flimsy and biased studies suggesting otherwise were just retracted https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/flimsy-antiabortion-studies-cited-in-case-to-ban-mifepristone-are-retracted/
