@davidrevoy
As a web Dev of 23 years and seeing what the big players have done to browsers and the web -- I can't help but feel concerned and skepticism. It's going to be an interesting few years on #fedi -- if any of the other closed platforms join this is going to get even more bizarre -- but as Mark Twain says
@davidrevoy I believe nobody expected you to hit that hard against Meta, Twitter, and so on. But you did, you really did. And I think the resulting art is really strong, emotional, and expressive, and I do appreciate it.
@davidrevoy But all in all, despite the horrible Meta tracking, in one day Threads got more users signed up than Mastodon has since it's launch, and more than the entire Fediverse in general.
not really organic signup per se, just facebook users enabled added feature in instagram. so not really the same as fediverse actual signup process. apples to oranges comparison.
@sammi@davidrevoy Yeah, I understand that, but at the same time, that doesn't really matter to content creators or companies. Even if Threads is artificially inflating it's numbers, it's still more appealing for an entity like a content creator or company to move over to with the 30m+ users than Mastodon only having 13m even after a 7 years of operation. By contrast, Discord already had well over 100m users after 7 years of operation. I don't mean to sound doomer-ish, I'm just wondering how Mastodon is supposed to compete with behemoths?
@davidrevoy@nyaeko I get what you're saying after all those years, what innovation and how compelling is it to onboard and sustain fedizens for the broader fediverse. Well, one thing thats different is money. facebook sunk a lot of money into copying twitter. its basically a clone. what happened to usa soo smart, they dont copy and steal IP like some others? yeah right, only when it suits the usa. hogwash, hypocrisy.
fbthreads is basically toxic facebook with a different face (get face...lol). consent for zero privacy, data harvesting, fb taking ownership of posted images (fb tos).
so if you think thats kool....your funeral...facebook is bad for mental health. it's toxic
@sammi@davidrevoy I don't think it's cool, I'm evaluating it from a perspective of which one people are more likely to swap over to, and given Threads model, I think that as of the moment, more people are likely to swap over to it than to Mastodon, even if I'd prefer people swap over to Mastodon myself.
well, I will stay with the fediverse. FYI...mastodon is a galaxy in the fediverse wheel. it is not the fediverse. the fediverse is way bigger than the galaxy.
I am comfortable domiciled on a friendica instance. I wave good luck to you as you head over to the other side. I never had fb, so as you can see. I don't give 2 shits about fb or its properties.
@davidrevoy A powerful image that, this account is my very first foray into any kind of 'social media'.
I'm a long-time, grey-haired IT consultant so no luddite, but have always steered clear of the all-powerful corporate behemoths and yearned for the 'good old days' when thousands of individual subject-specific forums were independently run by moderators for zero renumeration.
The open/decentralised nature of ActivityPub and particularly the Mastodon implementation is the thing that's brought me... cautiously... tentatively... into the fold.
Here's hoping this or something like it can be the way forward, and the Zuckerbergs of this world will eventually lose their shrivelled-claw-like grip on how the world communicates.
