Wasn't expecting an invitation to the #reddit IPO, but there you go. A decade ago I might've been interested, but today I just see "you made us some money, so here's an exclusive opportunity to make us some more money at your own risk!".
I'm not even in the right hemisphere to be eligible for this, nevermind a US citizen, which they could've seen if they even briefly glanced at my (long-abandoned) profile, but reddit haven't listened to anyone but themselves for a while, so I'm not surprised.
"If you are a certain kind of cynical, Reddit’s S-1 filing sets off alarm bells. There’s the mention of r/WallStreetBets. (Five mentions in total, actually.) There’s the stockpile it’s amassed of Bitcoin and Ethereum. And there’s the program to give certain power users the option of buying stock before it debuts on the public market."
Holy shit this is really going to be a bigger clusterfuck than expected huh
There’s gloomy speculation about the measures management may take to make the company profitable — which Subreddits might be banned, how much users might have to pay to post, a heavier ad load, etc.
They already Disallowed NSFW reedits from being accessed through the API (and therefore any third party apps)
Users are also mad that Aaron Swartz has been erased as a co-founder.
#reddit is going to sell their user data to #google so they can train their #AI and #LLM on reddit user data - apparently this could very well be a huge #gdpr violation.
@AlteredStateBlob made a good write up on what's going on and what you can do to enforce your rights and put a stop to this unbridled greed.
@humanhorseshoes@AlteredStateBlob I have to agree with this. The EU got much faster and very diligent in looking after data problems. Still slow in tech time, but flash fast in government times.
if, like me, you've got a reddit account that you're ready to nuke completely, this tool does a surprisingly great job (and includes a local backup option!): https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite
remember: if you just delete your reddit account without first deleting your posts, your posts will stay there for infinity, just without your name attached to it.
My #reddit Canary - whenever a sub has a highly upvoted post that’s just like “I graduated!” or “Finally got my license!” I immediately unsubscribe. I’m sorry, but that’s not “InterestingAsFuck” in the slightest.
@RedditRefugee I was. Ran a community there. It was a bit of an uphill battle.. federation with multiple instances AND infinite subcommunities kind of exhausted me. Sorry.
