Anyone building a federated Stack Overflow?

Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.

A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.

Loops is a new platform for sharing short videos, and it's open source + federated using #ActivityPub

We're really excited to share this sneak peek that showcases the new onboarding flow and discovery features (Connect Mastodon) and look forward to the upcoming beta release!

Are you ready for #Loops ?

The fediverse is amazing!

I can’t get over how cool it is to view my posts from any server. I’m definitely going to use activitypub for my social media I’m planning on making. I was going to use @Discourse , but considering it’s like where you are only able to self host and each instance of discourse can’t interconnect makes me kinda sad. But activitypub seems like the only way I feel happy in both ways.

Part of my frustration with and one of the things I find baffling giving everything else in it: the lack of tools for backpressure.

Backpressure is fundamental in building reliable distributed systems (c.f., Notes on Distributed Systems for Young Bloods). From a C2S perspective I get why it wouldn't need to be specified, but from a S2S federated protocol perspective its absence is frustrating.

All that it says is to take care not to overwhelm others and a bit on rate limits

If you're looking to host your very own single-user/a-few-users instance, you cannot go wrong with . It is simple to install on Ubuntu and works very well with some really solid clients. It is also written in C, so it is fast, with few dependencies. Great work @grunfink, you've got a new monthly supporter on Ko-fi!

Very happy to announce that @tomcoates and I have been given a grant to develop an end-to-end encryption (E2EE) protocol for DMs, including a reference implementation and a report to submit to the W3C SocialCG.

Ghost wejdzie do #Fedi !

The max_id, since_id, and min_id parameters in #Mastodon's Timeline API assume that the post ID is a sortable number. (Is this correct?) #Hollo, the #ActivityPub implementation I'm building, uses UUIDs for post IDs internally, so I'm stuck on how to implement a Mastodon-compatible API.

I'm working on adding a CLI toolchain to to help with debugging. The first feature I implemented is the ActivityPub object lookup.

Here's a demo.

The whole idea of BlueSky supporting nomadic identities but the rest of the ActivityPub (plus other stuff) Fediverse being unable to do so is such an oversold idea.

A new service using ActivityPub behind the scenes (and not the AT Protocol) can absolutely support nomadic identities, even if the service doesn't treat a whole website as the actor.

It will still use did:plc, same as AT Protocol (BlueSky), but once done so, an application that understands how to work with did:plc can dereference an actor based on the DID.

That said, an existing service will simply not be compatible with this idea, without changing how it operates.

Look at how @mikedev designed events in @streams! I would love to see this implemented in other software. @julian have you thought about how @nodebb would display an event yet? Does @silverpill's @mitra have any support? What about @grunfink's SNAC?

Here's a link to the event itself if anyone wants to query it in their software of choice.

Looking into this Summer of Protocols thing that @evan and @tomcoates got accepted for to work on adding encryption to , and realized its a grant from the Ethereum Foundation. I am not opposed to crypto slush money flowing into more useful projects like the but thought it was interesting that I hadn't seen anyone mention this fact yet.
