The French parliament has passed legislation that will enable the Government to set a floor price for farmers products, which is reviewable every four months.

The change will guarantee a minimum rate of return for French farmers.

It seems to me that if we are ever going to break the monopoly power of and in , then this is the sort of forward thinking approach needed by the Government.

They would, of course, just have to locate their collective back bone again (last seen when they changed the Stage 3 tax cuts, but misplaced soon afterwards) and stop being a largely pointless waste of space.

Four foreign aid workers and Palestinian translator killed in Israeli strike, Gaza officials say (Guardian, 2024-04-02)

“Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese confirmed an Australian national was among those killed while doing ‘extraordinarily important work’, naming her as Zomi Frankcom.”

“Albanese said on Tuesday the government would call in the Israeli ambassador over an incident that was ‘beyond any reasonable circumstances’, adding: ‘Australia expects full accountability for the deaths of aid workers, which is completely unacceptable.’”

The document, endorsed by over 100 Australian lawyers and barristers, outlines several actions by Albanese and other officials that allegedly constitute complicity, including:

I think it's now clear that the Israeli government would, if it could get away with it, wipe Gaza away entirely. Every brick, every remnant, every reminder, every piece of evidence that another people ever lived there before. That's the end point of this kind of political opportunism, and once you've set foot on that path, you really find it compelling to see it to the end. There's no exit ramp. There's no stopping short.

What is Australia's fair share when it comes to financing the necessary climate transition?

In a headline today, the Australian government has pledged AU$150m in for Pacific nations.

Good news, right? Isn't this PM Anthony "ending the " by actually doing what ought to have done years ago? Let's consider that assumption.

Back in 2009 at the much hyped, but ultimately deeply disappointing international climate negotiations in known as , one step forward that was agreed, even as more comprehensive or ambitious agreements slipped away was that the wealthy nations of the world (including ) collectively pledged to be providing US$100b each year to help the poorer nations transition away from () and develop in ways that help societies adapt to the warming that cannot be mitigated ().

EndemicEarthling,
@EndemicEarthling@todon.eu avatar

So, today's announcement by PM is at least a re-engagement with the global community on after years of isolationism. However, it is worth noting that of the AU$150m announced today, only $50m goes to the , with $100m directed towards a different multilateral body, the Pacific Resilience Facility. That's the equivalent of about US$33m, or 0.002% of Australia's of roughly US$1.6 trillion (2022 figures).

To be contributing the 0.22% of GNI mentioned earlier, Australia would need to contribute more than one hundred times that much each year (around US$3.5b, or AU$5.3b).

" ... a 28 day average of 96 deaths ...."

Comes to 24 deaths a week in Victoria.
3.4 deaths a day.

How many of these deaths are due to not introducing standards for workplaces, hospitals, aged care facilities, schools, restaurants, pubs and clubs?

MacPherson, to workersrights

It’s worth remembering that the Liberal party, under Peter , began running a soft NO campaign almost immediately after the federal election.

The Nationals announced their opposition to the voice before the question was even put forward.

The referendum was on what Indigenous leaders who co-signed the Uluru statement from the heart had asked for.

It was not Labor’s request nor was it a self-starter policy from Labor or Anthony .

It was the request of the Indigenous leaders who had been asked by Tony to form a consensus on what form of constitutional recognition they thought was best.

The answer was the statement from the heart – truth, treaty.

So this idea that the government didn’t work hard enough to get bipartisan support is .

If they had given the what it said it wanted (with no guarantees it still wouldn’t have tanked the referendum), then would have been compromising what Indigenous people had asked for – and it wasn’t Labor’s compromise to make.

This wasn’t just politics. It never is.

But for the opposition to now turn around and blame the government “for a missed opportunity” when it spent the last year doing what it could to destroy the voice proposal – which included asking misleading “questions” – is not only transparently predictable, it is another sad indictment of the state of political “debate” in this country.
