Something odd going on with the Android YouTube app.

Every so often it just starts downloading a random video on my phone when I connect to WiFi.

It's been doing it since last weekend & it just did another one just now.

The good news is Android Studio has come a long way since I first tried it when Android first launched. It’s matured, but still has a lot of obtueseness. At least it’s usable now.

I wish CompSci people would stop designing tools and programming language syntax.

Well. You know how I complain how slow XCode is? Android Studio is just as slow. It has something that goes through “Gradle project sync” on launch every time and takes as long as XCode’s “Preparing device”. I’m liking Python and its ilk more and more… Get more done.

Weird bug of the day: #Android code to retrieve location, untouched for months, suddenly stopped working apparently(?) because of a permission problem, sending the Activity into an infinite loop of pausing/resuming.

Force-stopping the app as well as manually giving necessary permissions did not solve the issue, and no amount of debugging helped me identify the actual cause of the problem.

After a device restart, the problem is gone as quickly as it appeared, and I'm none the wiser.

What keyboard app are folks using / can recommend on ? I've been using the google one forever, but it's deeply irritating me lately by changing stuff that isn't typos, like its to it's, has to had etc that I have to go back and fix, but I can't turn that off without also turning off automatically fixing stuff that definitely is a typo. Plus I often hit backspace instead of M and find myself in emojis or stickers after trying to type a comma. Boosts and suggestions of all kinds welcome.

I'm 99 % sure I found a music player for Android on some time ago, specifically allowing pitch correction (flat / sharp; semitone is the word I'm looking for) , and playback speed modification, which was handy for practicing guitar. But I have no idea what or was called anymore. Any idea?

⚠️ GitLab Security Flaw (exploit) ⚠️

No matter if you host your own copy of GitLab Software or use GitLab's servers directly, you should enable 2-step Verification - NOW (right now, do not wait). There is a current exploit that allows someone to hijack GitLab Accounts, who are not using 2-step verification.

tallship, to browsers

After several years of warning after warning after advisory after advisory and calls to repeatedly update or remove and NOT USE CHROME by the Department of Homeland Security, it should be inconceivable that anyone does - but they do.

Sometimes these are patched with automatic updates before horrific and catastrophic results occur, sometimes not. To be frank, part of the problem stems from the fact that Chrome is the largest attack surface out there where browsers are concerned, but notwithstanding it being the fav target are also serious privacy concerns that aren't shared by other chromium based browsers.

To be fair, many exploits are indeed shared by other chromium based browsers, but not most, while some are related to other browser capabilities, like WebRTC, but it's still best to just ditch Chrome and never look back.

Here's more coverage on vulnerabilities issued less than a month ago. It took 3 seconds to bring this up, and no, not using Google, which didn't reveal this when I tried that search engine in a subsequent search, lolz. Why would they return SERPs that poo poo their own product?

This one did come up in a google search

There's truly only one way to ensure safety - unplug. But there's a lot of simple things you can do to exact a reasonable level of security, so why not observe some of those best practices? It's not like it will cramp your style.

Anyway, that's my two cents. h/t to @darnell for raising awareness of this latest brokewell. Make sure you take the time to visit the link he's provided for you too.

There are plenty of that run on (to name a few, alphabetized):

  • Brave Browser
  • Chromium
  • DuckDuckGo
  • Firefox
  • Kiwi
  • Vivaldi

IMO, No one should be running Chrome - Desktop or otherwise. It's a privacy nightmare even when there aren't CERT warnings circulating.

🎉 Exciting news for our Android folks!

On the latest update on Vivaldi 6.7, we've amped up Translate, improved the Tracker and Ad blocker functionality, tweaked the Bookmarks manager, and many other features based on YOUR feedback.

🔖 We understand that Bookmarks are one of the most important aspects of your browsing. Now, Vivaldi remembers the last folder you opened in the Bookmarks Panel. We've also tidied up your bookmarks by sorting folders first, making navigation a breeze.

⚙️ We work with Lingvanex continuously to make the built-in Vivaldi Translate more efficient. With an improved performance and the quality of translations, we hope you'll find speedy results.

In addition to the above, we’ve polished the user interface and made improvements to features across the board.

Find out what they are and enjoy browsing with more of these powerful browser features👇🏻

Ok, this is weird:

The stock Messaging app lacks tons of features (like SEARCH), but it can send images via MMS very well.

The QUIK app (recent fork of QKSMS) does a great job of searching and even has a limited built-in backup function, but it totally fails at sending images over 300kb, and sometimes at all.

The Fossify messages app (fork of Simple Mobile Tools) does both, BUT it burns through battery crazy fast on my over-sized SMS DB.

Ugh.

Any FOSS SMS app recommendations?

My 2 cents:

ALL car OSes (CarPlay, Android Auto, etc.) should support all users:

  • My phone should connect automatically as soon as I get in the car.
  • The interface should be recognizable, easy to navigate, and fast.
  • No crashes. Ever.
  • All my apps should be supported, especially music (Apple Music and/or Spotify) podcasts (no matter the app) and Maps (Google/Apple).

If not, it's just green bubble, blue bubble all over again.
