It's quite sad watching the despite pleas of people asking for #bluesky invites and claiming FOMO. Fuck sake people it's an app, go outside and get some sun.
As of 15 minutes ago I can also be found on #Bluesky, if you’re there come find me @jonaharagon.com 😜 Now it’s past my bedtime, so I’ll have to actually explore it tomorrow lol
People talking about BlueSky so much. How many instances are there? Can I run my own self hosted instance? How is it federated if people need “invites” to join? Sounds very much like a trap. #BlueSky
Joined #Bluesky a couple days ago and, so far, I’m enjoying it more than #Mastodon. It feels like it scratches the same “itch” that Twitter did, which I wasn’t expecting since I don’t know many folks there.
Username is @a2.io for those who are already there.
"Q: Okay, so Musk and Dorsey are collaborators in some weird Mars cult, and don’t actually care about making money from Twitter?
A: Yeah, you’re getting it. Musk also seems pretty interested in helping advance Putin’s “multipolar world order,” which is why he plays footsie with QAnon and MAGA accounts, and pals around with Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. “How are things going in Bakhmut?,” Musk asked Medvedev." #BlueSky
I'm sorry I'm posting so much about this, but I've been trying the last hour or so to understand #BlueSky — we should be critical of social media platforms (here included!) given how much of a negative impact they have when implemented and/or managed poorly.
The vast majority (from scrolling though the "What's hot") of posts seem to be either self-congratulation or Tech Bro crap from accounts who have moved directly over from Twitter. The only mentions of the fediverse are how it's "tanking", or difficult to use, or "toxic".
Of the accounts appearing in the "What's hot" section, they seem to be primarily white cis men — read into that however you want, but for me the significant lack of queer community there is troubling, and suggests selective invitation.
I like the fact that in the #Fediverse the primary goal is not algorithms or making money, but owning your data and using social networks in your own terms.
#BlueSkySocial FEELS like open and decentralized but has been received funding from Twitter and has not yet fully revealed its monetization plans. This is why I won't fully trust it. I'm glad they won't invest in the ActicityPub protocol. Their reluctancy to AP is also something I find strange even after reading the arguments.
Let's remember that #BlueSky a startup company, and companies are to make money. This is where #Mastodon for example is different, there is no monetization and never will be.
Is #BlueSky built on top of #activitypub ? Hoping it’s going to be interoperable with #mastodon because it seems that the last wave of people fleeing #twitter are going there🤞
It’s effectively the web3 alternative to #activitypub . It’s a good North Star for the fediverse to aspirationally build towards.
But I’m only interested in BlueSky insofar as it interoperates with the existing #fediverse .
And I think they recognize that the the fediverse movement & community would turn on them if they cannibalize the existing network instead of adding to it as a friendly & compatible node.
