In Europe, budget airlines make inter-city travel ridiculously cheap. They also boost pollution and emissions.
European Sleeper, which started its #Brussels- #Amsterdam- #Berlin service last week, is hoping to replace flights by convincing people to switch to night trains.
'Negotiations' for the UK to rejoin the #Horizon research programme continue.... #JeremyHunt's in #Brussels trying (again) to get a discount because we've missed the first two years of the new programme.
Problem is that we caused that delay not the EU, and the feeling at the #EuropeanCommision is that they're not going to offer a discount because the UK can't get its ducks in a row.
Meanwhile #universities are hemorrhaging #researchers departing for somewhere they can get Horizon money now!
Precarious.
This set installation in #Brussels fascinates me. I can't understand how they manage to keep it upright - it has only a very tiny corner on the ground.
At the same time it strikes me as a rather too pertinent metaphor for the #Climate + #Energy system #ShippingContainer#Art#ArtInstallation
Riding to the @EU_Commission for the 2nd day of the #DigitalOcean forum.
It strikes me that if I lived in #Brussels I would be lobbying VERY hard to have Rue de la Loi leading through the #EU quarter closed to traffic and set aside for cyclists and pedestrians.
This should be an iconic view, imagine trees, bikes and people strolling instead of traffic + air pollution.. #livableCities#cycling
I will be organizing a strike in support of the EU’s Supply Chain Act (#CSDDD) TODAY from 10:00-12:00 AM in front of the EU Parliament!
Come to the Rue Wiertz 60, 1047 Bruxelles, Belgique to make parliamentarians vote “YES” on today’s vote and give support during the crucial negotiation period in the parliament right after!
Part of the Young Friends of the Earth (YFoEE) Initiative!
really excited that the night train between #Brussels and #Berlin is now running. Might actually use this at some point. Way back when, before the fall of the wall, I took quite a few night trains to and from Berlin. https://www.europeansleeper.eu/en
We dream of a #cohousing in #Brussels. If you do, too, we should talk. We are holding a presentation of our cohousing project, The Reef, on May 30th. Info and registration link: https://thereef.brussels, then click on "Join us".
Hello, my dearest European mastodon brethren!! My first ever headlining EU tour starts TONIGHT in Brussels 🥹. Full band, premiering this album. Excited is a drastic understatement.
I heard in #Belgium (#Brussels perhaps?) that a group of activists recently entered a #cashless cafe, ordered & enjoyed food & drinks and then insisted on paying cash. The cafe called the police, who then showed up but took no action & left because consumers have a right to pay in cash. Anyone know if those activists are a public org that can be joined &or supported? #askFedi#warOnCash
Known as one of the most car-oriented European capitals, Brussels has embarked on a mobility makeover.
At first gradually and then stunningly fast, Brussels’ transportation network has been reconfigured, shifting trips away from cars and toward bikes, public transport and walking.
Meanwhile, a huge pedestrian zone has emerged in the city center.
I said to a matress dealer in #Brussels: I don’t need a whole new matress, just a replacement zip-on outer layer. They said: impossible. We indeed sell matresses that have zip-off exteriors, but the manufacturer will not sell those separately because the cost is too high. Thus, everyone is forced to toss out the whole thing, box springs & all, because we cannot get replacement parts.
#ClimateDiary Fantastic short by Eva Sadoun, co-chair of Impact France, at Panel 11 (Business) at the #Brussels#Degrowth conference, about the work she is doing to tackle the VICE BONUS: how law, fiscal structures, investments are currently all set up to reward destructive practices, not sustainable ones. Very moving and good to hear from somone who has set up a business herself
After a couple of weeks in our Oslo office, @jon is heading for an exciting journey to #Seoul, #Tokyo, and #Brussels. And if you want to look him up, he is always happy to connect. :tony_happy:
The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in Brussel opened in 1847 drew a wide audience, attracted by elegant cafés and cultural spaces. The colony of French refugees, like Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Edgar Quinet and others, would also gather there.
