Meanwhile in #Antartica, the #climatecrisis continues to shift & change the pole's weather & environment, with consequences that will be felt across the world....
But, don't worry, #COP28 agreed we should consider transitoning away from #fossilfuels.... so that'a alright then - nothing to see here!
These descending slopes look terrifyingly unrealistic in the face of the cop out of #COP28. What hope there is we'll be descending through them anytime soon?
Dr Neil Grant (Climate Analytics) offers a glimmer of hope on #fossilfuels & the #climate crisis:
'For years, energy demand growth has outstripped renewables deployment, despite record additions of wind and solar. We’re now approaching the tipping point, where renewables overtake demand growth & start displacing coal, oil and gas. This would mark the beginning of the end for the fossil economy'.
If so this'll be despite the machinations of #COP28 not because of them
As we reflect on a year when #JustStopOil have been derided & prosecuted for their 'unreasonable' actions;
we should recall that across history little substantive #political change has ever been achieved by reasoned argument alone.
You may be uncomfortable with the 'fanatics' & their antics, but we should be clear being 'reasonable' for 30 years on the #ClimateCrisis got us to #COP28.... now is the time to be unreasonable as well. before we all sink below the waves!
Australia has offered the small Pacific island nation of Tuvalu an escape option from rising sea levels. But it comes with a catch: Australia could veto a strategic alliance with China. On Jan 26, islanders will have a say in an important election. https://wapo.st/3GYjLTs
If you were in charge of evaluating the success of climate conferences based on one key metric, namely the atmospheric concentration of CO2, would you conclude they’re successful or need only a few adjustments such as more “commitment” or “bold actions” by decision makers or would you say they’re fully inadequate for their purpose?
"Nonetheless, the capitalist system’s industrialists and financiers, and the governments that cater to them and bend to their will, would like nothing more than to continue business as usual. That will soon be impossible. Once again, our descendants — living in a world of flooded cities, food shortages, resource depletion, mass species die-offs, unprecedented human migration and large numbers of people dying should business as usual continue — are not likely to believe that their ruined world would be a fair tradeoff for a handful of industrialists and financiers of the past getting obscenely rich. We live in a global economic system under which it is profitable for a handful of powerful people to profit from the destruction of the environment, and this behavior is richly rewarded. The end of capitalism is precisely what must be envisioned. Organize like your life depends on it, because it does."
🛢️ Despite the hailed deal to “transition away from fossil fuels”, the 2023 UN climate summit’s text has the oily fingerprints of the fossil fuel lobby all over it.
🕴️The reality is #COP28 is more likely to facilitate a fossil fuel frenzy by cementing false solutions in the text: exactly what the army of lobbyists ordered.
COP28 organisers really spared no expense - on burnishing their own image.
"Instagram videos of glamorous couples lounging on sun-filled beaches or giving quirky outfit tutorials were used to spread positive messaging about the COP process and the UAE’s position on climate, as the critical UN talks progressed in #Dubai."
#ClimateDiary As 2023 is ending, I recall my hopeful optimism a year ago that 2023 might be a #TurningPoint for climate awareness, carbon emissions plateauing and #Transition / #Regeneration - it being the 50th anniversary of Schumacher’s #SmallIsBeautiful and all that (see 🧵 in link) .
I kept on sharing this great cover (“the new world is almost born” #Gramsci). But has 2923 been a turning point? 1/5
#ClimateDiary 3/5 The monsters of fascism, tech billionaires and colonial capitalism in general are ever more powerful and ugly, and so much #BusinessAsUsual - eg #COP28
It’s also been a year of big #ClimateAction setbacks for me personally. There are always many setbacks, of course, but normally i am energised by new ideas and projects that I am hopeful about - right now, I don’t have exciting new plans, and last year’s optimism feels embarrassingly naive.
The UAE, host to the latest UN climate conference, showcases the vices that need to be vanquished if we’re going to have anything approaching a green society.

Capitalism creates socioeconomic inequality by concentrating wealth and power among a select few, perpetuates systemic oppression, inherently exploits labor which leads to alienation and a lack of worker autonomy, prioritizes profit over social needs, and exacerbates environmental degradation and resource depletion. We aren't the problem. Capitalism is the problem. #capitalism#inequality#exploitation#anticapitalism
#Africa’s #Hunger Crisis Deepens as War, Climate Pile on Pain
"The region of 1.2 billion people, which is home to many of the world’s poorest communities, suffered badly as food and fuel prices surged following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Its farmers have also been battered by #ExtremeWeather events, including droughts and flooding linked to #ClimateChange, further pressuring prices by disrupting food supplies."
"#Agriculture and #food were very much on the menu at #COP28 in Dubai, with both voluntary pledges and negotiated texts beginning to reflect their central role in climate change.
The links between #ClimateChange and #biodiversity loss also featured throughout the two weeks of negotiations, with several of the major texts referencing the impacts that each has on the other."
