French city of Montpellier makes public transport free for all residents https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/22/montpellier-france-free-public-transport-residents

@therightarticle At certain times of year public transport is also free in my home city, Murcia - all of December and also certain public holiday days. The trams are rammed full & the buses are pretty busy, too.

Making local public transport free looks like the cheapest and fastest way to cut pollution in our cities.

“calls on” participating nations to “contribute” to the “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems.”

"The word “away” ... offers a hard benchmark for both climate speech and climate action. Does that speech and action sustain, justify, excuse, or promote fossil fuels? Or does it transition, move, innovate, or legislate away from them? These questions can be answered with a clarity that not even the phrase “phaseout” can provide."

The final text of offers a weak compromise full of lingo.

But activists can turn the tables by focusing on the little word "transitioning away from fossil fuels - and for every policy, every action, every future agreement, we can ask: does it support moving away from fossil fuels or not?
