STUDY notes that the severity of an infectious disease depends on the level of the infectious dose: The higher the dose, the more serious the infection outcomes. "The dose of exposure is determined by human behavior, environmental conditions and mitigation strategies, such as indoor versus outdoor exposure, indoor crowding, indoor air ventilation and physical distancing." Even if you get , being cautious (masks, lower crowds, shorter times, better air) matter!

And to think I have to thank for bringing back the cancer I beat in 2016.

That. can bring back or cause cancer is in scholarly journals now.

But when I shared that the hospital oncologists said that is what happened, I was called every name.

Fun times.

Honesty About Covid is Essential for Progress

"Unfortunately, the newest widely circulating pathogen in the human population uses a broadly expressed ACE2 receptor to infect cells, meaning it can damage almost any part of the body."

Many #COVID19 cautious are posting endlessly about H5N1. I am not going to follow them down the rabbit hole. Avian flu may or may not become a human-to-human pandemic, but...

  1. I continue to believe we're ignoring the immediate and real risk we face with COVID

  2. We don't help mental health by constantly promoting POTENTIAL risks

  3. If it becomes a pandemic, we'll know

  4. If morons want to drink unpasteurized milk and risk death, blindness and illness, I am powerless to stop them, anyway.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

I already spend around a dozen hours a week tracking studies and sharing the very real risks we are ignoring. I don't need to become a "doomer," chasing after every possible Monkeypox, Avian flu, and mystery illness report. Instead of focusing on all the risks that may not be real or immediate, I'd urge us to pay more attention to the fact COVID is still mutating, reinfections are dangerous, COVID damages brains, hearts and other organs, and Long COVID is a growing risk in 2024.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is doing a study on the impact from covid on people's health.

They need folk who have had and have NOT had covid for a survey.

"COVID-19 has infected more than 600 million people and has resulted in greater than 6 million deaths globally. Research scientists from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health want to better understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people’s health.

We are interested in hearing from people who have experienced COVID-19 illness and those who have not. Everyone’s experience is important for us to understand."

Anyone have recommendations for high quality air purifiers with a Hepa filter and Merv13+? I’ve tried different purifiers over the years and either they end up not having an actual Hepa filter, stop making replacement filters, or filter replacements are too expensive. I like my Levoit, but it turns out they aren’t actually Hepa filters. And my Renpho went from having $30-50 filter replacements to now $90 on Amazon. I can’t even buy them from Renpho anymore.

My spreadsheet of studies showing the longer-term impact of has risen to 600 studies. New additions:

-COVID causes hypertension long term in non-hospitalized patients

  • MRI results indicate that changes in brain function contribute to cognitive complaints in people with long COVID even after 2 years

  • Some COVID-19-recovered patients have persistent colonization of SARS-CoV-2 in their cardiac tissue

  • SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection leads to disturbances in cellular immunity. (1/2)

  • At 12-months, 7 % of first-positives & 7.5 % of reinfected kids experienced cognitive impairment

  • Neonatal/antenatal exposure to associated with delayed personal-social skills & delayed social-emotional development

  • Cognitive difficulties were present in mild (11.7%), moderate (39.2%) & severe (48.9%) COVID cases 18 months after infection.

  • A positive SARS-CoV-2 test was associated with self-assessed worsening of overall health, persisting for 22 months

Do you know what killed more than 19,000 Americans in the last 3 months? Covid. About 9 an hour. Many many more than that have been hurt, often permanently.

That’s a lower number than previously, yet the risks remain.

Stay home when ill, wear masks in crowds and inside, stay up to date on your vaccinations and improve ventilation (ex: opening windows) to stay healthier.

Every crisis brings out the best and worst in people. Here's the worst: A part-time actor has been convicted of soliciting investors for a fake cure in March 2020. He claimed to have a patent-pending cure and investors eager to buy his company. (A cure? In March 2020? A fool and their money...) The man faces up to 20 years in federal prison on each of 11 counts of wire fraud.

I'll say "post-COVID infection," never "post-COVID pandemic."

I'll say "since COVID began," never "since COVID ended."

I'll say "after pandemic caution ended," never "after the pandemic ended."

I'll say "what we know AS OF NOW about COVID," because the story of won't be complete until we know what 5 or ten infections do or, for that matter, what a virus that can remain in the body causes ten years after a single infection.

We have much to learn. Many will learn the hard way.
