We've received a few questions lately from the community inquiring about what Flipboard is, so we wanted to share a bit about our mission to inform and inspire the world.
You might also be familiar with our moves to federate our platform.
We are also an award-winning app/website where publishers, creators, and community members curate content about topics ranging from politics to philosophy. If you want to check it out, download it here, follow topics that interest you, and let us know what you think. We'd love to hear from you.
@tennoseremel This is what happens when we say things internally all the time and then assume everyone knows what we're talking about!
Basically, we have these things we call Magazines, which are like containers into which stories can be added. Publishers usually add content via RSS feed, so following one of their Magazines on Flipboard is like following an RSS feed.
Individual users will manually curate (add content to) Magazines. This can be stories they find around the web or on Flipboard itself. Following their Magazines is like following a topical feed of content from multiple sources.
In addition, lots of people just choose to use Flipboard as a content aggregator — based on the topics/publishers etc they choose when they first start using the app, they'll get a "For You" feed aligned with their interests. After that they can just read the stories they're interested in — or they can take the next step and start curating!
Hope that's explained things further and not made things more confusing!
@wildflower@alienmelon imo the fact that someone without all the advantages would try their best to make something accessible, like you, speaks volumes to the quality of work and sets standards because people with advantages don’t always even care that much… thank you for the thoughtful comment. that sounds like a wonderful project too 🙏✨💖
@Jeltron@alienmelon it’s an interesting point (or discussion) because in other conversations about solo dev things like that came up too… but i think solo dev is a spectrum really because imo it’s all about the art of resourcefulness. you use whatever you have or can to make your thing. you grow these skills to do things you’re initially not good at over time.
If you are in to archives and all things graphic design and lettering arts, there’s a great paid internship going @letterformarchive in San Francisco.
Wonderful group of people to work with, and an amazing collection
In December, we started to federate the accounts of some Flipboard publishers and in February, we introduced Magazines to the fediverse. Now, we’re taking two important steps: federating the accounts of 400 creators and expert curators; and enabling two-way communication so that new followers and fediverse activity are visible and actionable in the Flipboard app.
To learn more about this, take a look at our blogpost:
Thanks so much to everyone who has given feedback on what we’ve done so far. We welcome your thoughts and comments as we continue on our journey to fully federate Flipboard.
@deutrino Those are two popular communities on Flipboard and a natural place for us to start, but it was not intentional and a good reminder that we should diversify! There are excellent curators around photography, technology, human rights, climate and many other topics in the mix. We hope to add many more in the coming weeks and will be updating the spreadsheet as we go. You can also apply to have your own profile federated by filling in this survey:
I went thru and followed a few, now that I know the spreadsheet will be updated I'll come back and have a look at it.
would be great if it could be organized by topic, or have a field with some hint of topic in it, but I understand that might be difficult. my main concern is, having read thru the spreadsheet, I'm hoping new listings won't be added in the middle, which would mean I'd have to read the whole thing over again to find new ones!

What does it mean to federate your Flipboard profile? In the simplest terms, it means that whatever you curate (aka share) on Flipboard will be "syndicated" out to the fediverse with no extra effort. @miaq tests it out and breaks it down.
@mjgardner It's coming — we promise! Just making sure we slowly roll out new features so that we can get feedback from this community and tweak things as we go. It's been invaluable so far!
