Google announced yesterday that many of its major products will have AI integration, which includes one of the most widely used sites, Google Search. As Big Tech companies battle for AI dominance, Europe is taking the lead with specific guardrails. Vox looks at what Washington is doing to protect Americans from AI's rapid advancement.

Google showed impressive things at .

But I will never join the Google ecosystem because all the data one puts into Google’s cloud is accessible by Google, by anyone who hacks Google, and by any government that forces Google to hand over data.

Contrast this to Apple’s iCloud, which is end-to-end encrypted. This means Apple cannot see the data you store with it¹ and therefore hackers/governments also cannot do anything with it if accessed.

Sch.... Zeitzone!

I may be wrong, but AI is not a thing yet, right? All the "AI" talk at (and everywhere...) is really machine learning, not artificial intelligence, right? Learning algorithms are super impressive, but there's no real intelligence there yet, as I understand it...

Happy to be corrected!

I think was good, but my takeaways are in Search, The Pixel Tablet, and some of the new app features. I will be buying a Pixel tablet on price alone. I then plan to compare it to the SamSung Tab S8 on the .

Love the Google Pixel Fold design, but the Tensor G2 is an inefficient mess with a terrible modem, so it’s a no go for me.

That and the part where it’s $1800 that I don’t feel like spending.

The next big “the algorithm is biased!” battleground will happen in search - once again - as generative AI results begin to include citations, and outlets scream that their version of reality has been censored.

Overall I wasn't that impressed with this year.
It was basically just AI, AI, AI and most of that looked like catching up with other companies.

I had some (super brief, super-limited) hands-on time with the Google Pixel Tablet. Here's my early thoughts. Very early.

Pixel Tablet is super tempting and seems fairly priced. I love the idea of a shared, docked tablet that functions primarily as a home hub.

Assuming the assistant works like a Nest Hub does when it's docked, it'd be great in the kitchen while cooking and plucked off the dock to read the news with breakfast. hmmmMMMMMmmMMM :blobfoxthink:

For a company that just fired all their leading AI Ethics researchers, Google sure talked a lot about "responsible" AI in their Keynote

The price is huge.. 1.800 €!
Seems I need to wait a little bit longer to have a foldable phone. 🤔

revealed the two weirdest features as a pair.

  1. Give a short summary and Google will draft an e-mail for you based on it. You can even click "elaborate" and it will make the e-mail longer.

  2. When opening an e-mail, Gmail can summarize the entire thing for you so you don't have to read all of it.

Does everyone realize how fucking bizarre this is?

Both people in the conversation want to work with directness and brevity, and Google is doing textual steganography in the middle.
